What is a civil engineer internship?

A Civil Engineer Internship is a temporary position designed to provide students or recent graduates with practical experience in the field of civil engineering. Interns typically assist with project planning, design, site inspections, and technical report writing under the supervision of experienced engineers. This hands-on experience helps develop essential skills and provides exposure to real-world engineering projects. Internships may be offered by construction companies, government agencies, or engineering firms.

What kind of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during a civil engineer internship?

As a Civil Engineer Intern, you can expect to assist with a range of tasks such as preparing engineering drawings, conducting site visits, collecting data, and supporting project documentation. Interns often work closely with experienced engineers on real-world projects, including infrastructure design, construction management, or environmental analysis. You may attend team meetings, help prepare reports, and use engineering software to model or analyze components. This hands-on experience provides valuable insight into the workflow of civil engineering teams and helps build foundational skills for future roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a civil engineer internship, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Civil Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of engineering fundamentals, mathematics, and technical drawing, typically gained through pursuing a civil engineering degree. Familiarity with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and other design or modeling software, as well as basic knowledge of industry standards, is often expected. Strong analytical thinking, willingness to learn, effective communication, and teamwork skills help you stand out. These competencies are essential for supporting project teams, delivering accurate work, and gaining valuable hands-on experience in the field.

What do you do as a civil engineer internship?

A civil engineer internship involves assisting with the design, planning, and analysis of construction projects such as roads, bridges, and buildings. Interns often support senior engineers by preparing drawings, conducting site inspections, and using software like AutoCAD or Civil 3D to develop project plans. The role provides practical experience in project management, technical skills, and understanding of safety and regulatory standards.

Which internship is best for civil engineer internship students?

The best civil engineering internships are those offered by reputable construction firms, engineering consulting companies, or government agencies that provide hands-on experience with design, surveying, and project management. Internships that include exposure to industry-standard tools like AutoCAD or Civil 3D and offer mentorship can enhance skill development and job readiness.

Job description

Job Description

This role offers an opportunity for an early-career Civil Engineer (EIT) to work on diverse site development projects for both public and private clients, ranging from parks to commercial buildings. You will collaborate closely with project managers, engineers, and drafters/designers to deliver complete site designs, including grading, stormwater modeling, and utility design. The position provides strong mentorship, a flexible and relaxed work environment, and clear potential to grow into a project management role.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and drafters/designers to deliver complete civil site development projects for public and private clients.
  • Perform civil site design tasks including grading, stormwater modeling, and utility layout and design.
  • Support the preparation of design drawings and plans using Civil 3D and AutoCAD software.
  • Assist in coordinating project details with owners, architects, and construction companies to ensure successful project execution.
  • Contribute to the development of site plans for a variety of projects, such as parks and commercial buildings.
  • Participate in project meetings and communicate design progress and issues with the project team.
  • Conduct occasional site visits, as needed, to observe field conditions and support project implementation (up to approximately 15% of the time).
  • Help maintain project schedules by completing assigned tasks accurately and on time.
  • Work closely with team members in an open-office environment, sharing information and collaborating on design solutions.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn, take direction, and develop toward increased responsibility and potential project management duties over time.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field (or equivalent education in civil engineering).
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) status or eligibility to obtain EIT in a reasonable timeframe.
  • 0–2 years of experience in civil engineering, with an interest in site development; recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
  • At least 6 months of Civil 3D experience gained through schooling or industry work.
  • At least 6 months of experience or exposure to site development design, including grading and utilities, through coursework, internships, or professional experience.
  • Proficiency with Civil 3D and AutoCAD for civil site design and drafting.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment with project managers, engineers, and drafters/designers.
  • Strong communication skills to coordinate with owners, architects, and construction teams.
  • Ability to manage time effectively to meet project deadlines and schedules.
  • Willingness and ability to perform occasional site visits as required by project needs.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Prior internship or co-op experience in civil site development or related civil engineering work.
  • Familiarity with stormwater modeling concepts and software from academic or professional experience.
  • Demonstrated interest in growing into a project management role over time.
  • Comfort working on a variety of project types, including parks, commercial developments, and other site projects.
  • Ability to thrive in a relaxed, flexible, and family-like office culture.
  • Self-motivated attitude with a desire to learn new tools, standards, and design practices.

Work Environment

This position is based in an open-office environment with approximately 5–8 team members, including drafters/designers, engineers, and project managers. The workspace has no private offices or cubicles, so you will work in close proximity to colleagues and collaborate frequently throughout the day. The office culture is relaxed and calm, with a family-like feel and flexible hours, as long as you complete your work and meet project schedules. Occasional site visits, up to about 15% of your time, may be required depending on project needs and direction from the project manager. You will use tools such as Civil 3D and AutoCAD daily to support civil site design and drafting activities.
