What is a civil engineer in training EIT?

Civil Engineers In Training (EITs) are individuals who have earned a degree in civil engineering and passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, but have not yet obtained a Professional Engineer (PE) license. EITs typically work under the supervision of licensed engineers, gaining hands-on experience required for licensure. Their responsibilities can include assisting with project design, preparing reports, conducting site inspections, and performing calculations. Becoming an EIT is an important step towards becoming a fully licensed professional engineer (PE) in the civil engineering field.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect as a civil engineer in training EIT?

As a Civil Engineer In Training (EIT), you will typically support licensed engineers on a range of projects such as roadway design, site development, structural analysis, or water resources management. Your daily tasks may include preparing engineering drawings, conducting field inspections, assisting with project estimates, and performing calculations under supervision. You’ll often collaborate closely with project managers, senior engineers, and drafting technicians, gaining exposure to different phases of the project lifecycle. This role is designed to help you develop technical skills, understand regulatory requirements, and build experience toward professional licensure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a civil engineer in training EIT, and why are they important?

A Civil Engineer In Training (EIT) needs a solid foundation in mathematics, engineering principles, and problem-solving, typically backed by a relevant engineering degree and passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and structural analysis tools is highly beneficial. Strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills help EITs collaborate effectively and manage project documentation. These competencies are critical for accurate project design, regulatory compliance, and successful progression to licensed professional engineer status.

This Opportunity

Sunrise Engineering is seeking a full-time Engineer in Training (EIT) to join our Civil Design group and work in our Star Valley, Wyoming office. Our talented team of 500 professionals takes pride in a collaborative approach that ensures project success for clients and communities. With a passion for top-quality solutions and cost-effective outcomes, our experts thrive personally and professionally.

Who is Sunrise Engineering?

We hold 25 offices across the states of Utah, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Wyoming and Idaho committed to creating solutions that work and relationships that last. Join our dynamic team at Sunrise Engineering to make a meaningful impact on future-shaping projects.

Make a Lasting Impact

A Civil Engineer-in-Training (EIT) provides both strategic and operational support to service center managers throughout the organization. We are looking for candidates who are:

Engineering Rockstar. A day in the life of a Sunrise engineer-in-training (EIT) is never the same as you work with a range of differing projects. Essential to our team, you’ll work on a variety of projects from start to finish—helping project managers set budgets, basemap existing sites and utilities, collect field data, and lay the groundwork for successful designs. EITs play a key role in developing feasibility studies, master plans, and conceptual designs, while turning ideas into detailed plans that clearly communicate design intent to contractors and owners. You’ll get hands-on experience preparing drawings, grading and pipe layouts, hydrologic and hydraulic models, roadway designs, specifications, and impact analyses, and much more. Along the way, you’ll also gain valuable field experience through construction observation and administration—helping you connect design with real-world results and grow toward professional licensure.

A solid, reliable colleague. Verbal and written communication skills with both clients and your team are essential for EITs. You will collaborate with various engineers, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure the seamless integration of design elements, details, changes, and full execution of projects. A good EIT is a great communicator, accountable, teachable, and responsible. In this position you will feel ownership over your project, drawings, and plans, especially as you see them get built in real life and move from cradle to grave in the project life-cycle.

Certified and Experienced. For this role, we are looking for someone who knows their stuff. A four-year degree from an accredited civil engineering program, passed your FE exam, and Civil 3D/CAD experience will make you a very strong candidate.

Picture yourself here? We encourage you to apply whether your experience aligns with every qualification or not. We’re focused on cultivating a community of people who can grow with us, and you might be the person we’re looking for, even if you don’t realize it yet.

Our Offerings:

  • 4 weeks of PTO to ensure you have the balance you need, with one week already in the bank ready to use on day 1
  • 401k options, with a company match, and you're fully vested on your first day
