Civil Engineer In Training Eit information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a civil engineer in training EIT, and why are they important?

A Civil Engineer In Training (EIT) needs a solid foundation in mathematics, engineering principles, and problem-solving, typically backed by a relevant engineering degree and passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and structural analysis tools is highly beneficial. Strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills help EITs collaborate effectively and manage project documentation. These competencies are critical for accurate project design, regulatory compliance, and successful progression to licensed professional engineer status.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect as a civil engineer in training EIT?

As a Civil Engineer In Training (EIT), you will typically support licensed engineers on a range of projects such as roadway design, site development, structural analysis, or water resources management. Your daily tasks may include preparing engineering drawings, conducting field inspections, assisting with project estimates, and performing calculations under supervision. You’ll often collaborate closely with project managers, senior engineers, and drafting technicians, gaining exposure to different phases of the project lifecycle. This role is designed to help you develop technical skills, understand regulatory requirements, and build experience toward professional licensure.

What is a civil engineer in training EIT?

Civil Engineers In Training (EITs) are individuals who have earned a degree in civil engineering and passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, but have not yet obtained a Professional Engineer (PE) license. EITs typically work under the supervision of licensed engineers, gaining hands-on experience required for licensure. Their responsibilities can include assisting with project design, preparing reports, conducting site inspections, and performing calculations. Becoming an EIT is an important step towards becoming a fully licensed professional engineer (PE) in the civil engineering field.

Job description

ABOUT THRASHER
The Thrasher Group has been improving the communities where we live and work since 1983 - not as outside consultants, but as residents and neighbors. Thrasher is the largest privately owned architecture, engineering, and surveying firm in West Virginia, and maintains a growing presence in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. Our roots throughout central Appalachia and the Mid-Atlantic region have allowed us to build a reputation for doing meaningful work for communities of all sizes.
What does this mean for you? Thrasher provides real opportunities to be a part of vital projects, handle real-world responsibility, and develop a career that grows with you. Our multi-disciplinary teams work across the full life cycle of a project and with an array of industry professionals - giving you the knowledge and experience to do more. In short, we're not a steppingstone. Thrasher is a firm where people build better careers and better communities, all in the places they call home.
THE OPPORTUNITY
We are looking for a motivated Project Engineer to join our Civil Engineering team. In this role, you will contribute to a wide range of public and private infrastructure projects - water and wastewater systems, site development, transportation, and more - while growing your technical skills under the guidance of experienced senior engineers. This is a hands-on role with real project responsibility and a clear path for professional development.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Perform engineering design, analysis, and calculations for civil infrastructure projects including water/wastewater systems, stormwater, roadways, and site development
  • Prepare construction plans, specifications, and technical reports
  • Assist with project management tasks including schedule tracking, client communications, and coordination with subconsultants and contractors
  • Conduct site visits, field investigations, and construction observation as needed
  • Support permitting and regulatory submissions with state and federal agencies
  • Collaborate within a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, architects, and surveyors
  • Contribute to the preparation of proposals and scopes of work

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Required: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
  • Required: Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
  • Preferred: 1-5 years of relevant civil engineering experience (internship experience counts)
  • Preferred: Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, or similar design software
  • Preferred: Experience with water/wastewater design or municipal infrastructure
  • Plus: PE licensure or active progress toward licensure
  • Plus: Knowledge of WV and Mid-Atlantic regulatory requirements

BENEFITS
We offer a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance; flexible spending and dependent care accounts; a Health Savings Account with company contributions; company-paid short- and long-term disability; and a $100,000 life insurance policy paid for by the company. We also offer supplemental life, dental, and vision insurance, along with accident, hospital indemnity, and critical illness coverage for added peace of mind.
We invest in our employees' futures through a traditional and Roth 401(k) with up to a 4% company match, profit sharing, and discretionary bonuses. Employees enjoy paid time off, paid parental leave, and support for continuing education and professional registrations, plus assistance with warehouse club memberships, gym, and race entry fees.
We recognize the importance of work-life balance and offer schedule flexibility within a family-oriented culture that's been building communities across the Mid-Atlantic for over 40 years.
The Thrasher Group conducts pre-employment drug screens and background checks on all applicants who accept offers of employment. Authorization to work in the United States is a precondition of employment. EEO / AA / E-Verify employer.
