Civil Engineer In Training Eit information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Civil Engineer In Training (EIT), and why are they important?

A Civil Engineer In Training (EIT) needs a solid foundation in mathematics, engineering principles, and problem-solving, typically backed by a relevant engineering degree and passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and structural analysis tools is highly beneficial. Strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills help EITs collaborate effectively and manage project documentation. These competencies are critical for accurate project design, regulatory compliance, and successful progression to licensed professional engineer status.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect as a Civil Engineer In Training (EIT)?

As a Civil Engineer In Training (EIT), you will typically support licensed engineers on a range of projects such as roadway design, site development, structural analysis, or water resources management. Your daily tasks may include preparing engineering drawings, conducting field inspections, assisting with project estimates, and performing calculations under supervision. You’ll often collaborate closely with project managers, senior engineers, and drafting technicians, gaining exposure to different phases of the project lifecycle. This role is designed to help you develop technical skills, understand regulatory requirements, and build experience toward professional licensure.

What are Civil Engineer In Training (EIT) professionals?

Civil Engineers In Training (EITs) are individuals who have earned a degree in civil engineering and passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, but have not yet obtained a Professional Engineer (PE) license. EITs typically work under the supervision of licensed engineers, gaining hands-on experience required for licensure. Their responsibilities can include assisting with project design, preparing reports, conducting site inspections, and performing calculations. Becoming an EIT is an important step towards becoming a fully licensed professional engineer (PE) in the civil engineering field.

Job description

We have immediate openings for Civil Engineers-In-Training (EIT) across our Tualatin, Bend, Keizer, Vancouver, and Seattle offices. At AKS, we're not just building great engineers; we're building great consultants. This is the perfect opportunity for someone with a few years of experience and their EIT or EI certification who is ready to take the next step - not just as an engineer, but as a consultant. In this role, you will collaborate with our principals and multidisciplinary task leads on a diverse mix of private site development and public works projects, gaining exposure across different project types, clients, and markets to develop well-rounded consulting skills from the ground up.

What You'll Do
  • Design streets and utilities in line with state, county, and city standards.
  • Run hydrology/hydraulic calculations for designing stormwater management systems.
  • Perform plan and callout reviews to ensure all technical calculations are present.
  • Prepare stormwater run-off calculations, designs, and reports.
  • Work closely with both our in-house team and external subconsultants to keep projects running smoothly.
  • Use Civil 3D for drafting tasks, including importing points, creating line work, setting up and adjusting alignments, grading, running earthwork calculations, and managing survey points.
  • Generate and compile submittal packages for land use applications, construction plans, survey records, and more.
  • Engage directly with clients, agencies, and project stakeholders to develop your consulting presence and client management skills.
Who You Are
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or equivalent with EIT certification and actively working toward PE licensure.
  • 1 to 5 years of civil design experience, ideally with growing project management responsibilities.
  • You have a "Do what needs to be done" mindset, taking ownership beyond assigned tasks and stepping in wherever needed to keep projects, teams, and customers supported and running smoothly.
  • Intermediate skills in Civil 3D and proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to coordinate across teams, clients, and agencies.
  • Highly organized with the ability to juggle multiple deadlines and keep projects moving efficiently.
  • Takes ownership of delivering high-quality work on time and within budget - a "do what needs to be done" mindset, stepping in wherever needed to keep projects and teams running smoothly.
  • A strong team player who thrives in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.
  • Excited about growing into a well-rounded consultant - not just a technical specialist - and wants exposure to different project types, clients, and challenges.
Nice to Have
  • Familiar with HydroCAD or other hydro-modelling software for stormwater modeling and analysis.
  • Proficient with Bluebeam for reviewing and marking up plans and documents.
  • Skilled at building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, agencies, and team members.
  • Enjoys mentoring and supporting the growth of junior staff.
