Job description

Summary of Position

The Lead Cashier is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Cashier Department for Advertising, Circulation, and Miscellaneous-related functions, and will be expected to interact internally with Advertising, Circulation Distribution, Customer Service, and other members of the Finance Department and with external vendors and banks to ensure all account and subscriber payments are properly applied on a timely basis.

Essential Duties & Functions

  • Review and approve all the companyโ€™s daily bank deposits for advertising, circulation, and miscellaneous cash receipts.
  • Prepare and process cash and RDS bank deposits for Circulation and Advertising payments


  • Verify that all Circulation reports for Single Copy Sales (Aperta) and HD subscribers (Mellon Bank) are checked for accuracy to Naviga reports and bank e-mail notifications
  • Ensure accuracy of all cashier worksheets to be used within the department before forwarding to Circulation or other Finance areas.
  • Post daily deposits into Cashier database (MS-Excel) for reconciliation to the general ledger system at corporate period end.
  • Utilize an Advertising billing/accounts receivable system to apply daily cash receipts to advertising accounts.
  • Utilize a Circulation payment process system and billing/accounts receivable system to apply cash receipts to retail outlet accounts, verify Circulation Collection run totals, and prepare and process payments. The individual will also be responsible for subscriber payments mailed directly to Newsday and the overnight package from the Mellon Bank lockbox facility with unprocessed payments for subscriber accounts.
  • Utilizing the Aperta (Single Copy payment processing system) process to scan/apply all Single Copy check remittances collected by the Single Copy Collectors for retail outlet accounts
  • Apply via batch posting all cash collected by Single Copy Collectors
  • Manage all gifts certificates and reimbursement of petty cash
  • Responsible for daily mail for Circulation, Advertising, and miscellaneous check payments remitted to Newsday
  • Process and forward discrepancies, due to duplicate or unidentified payments to Credit, Billing, or Customer Service departments for follow-up
  • Follow current internal controls.
  • Perform other related ad hoc tasks and assignments as needed

Essential Job Knowledge & Skills

  • Associate or Undergraduate degree in Accounting or Finance preferred, not required
  • A minimum of 2-3 yearsโ€™ experience in a Cashier or Finance environment


  • Proficiency with numbers, handling money and operating currency machinery
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and successfully meet aggressive/tight deadlines
  • Excellent PC skills including knowledge of Microsoft Excel required
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required
  • Must have aptitude with financial information with focus on accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to work a flexible and varied schedule including extended hours, weekends and holidays as needed to support business needs

Physical Requirements

  • This position requires a minimum of four (4) days working in the office per week.


Compensation

  • The hourly base range for this role is $26.00 - $27.00/hr, commensurate with experience.
