Church Custodian

Calvary Lutheran Church - Bemidji, Minnesota

Mission and Vision Statement: Gathering to worship, Connecting with Jesus, Serving our neighbors: God calls us to live faithfully, follow Jesus boldly and serve others joyfully.

Vision for Custodian Ministry: Calvary is an active church which has many programs including Sunday and Wednesday worship services, a full-time preschool and childcare, and many other events that utilize the facility. Our vision for this ministry is for a custodian who can see the needs of the facility and can care for the building and grounds in a way that creates a space of hospitality and welcome.

Position Description: The Church Custodian will ensure that Calvary's worship areas, building, and grounds are kept clean, safe, and ready for all users and events. They will work with Calvary staff and volunteers to fulfill the needs of this position.

Position Specifics:

  • Reports to the Church Administrator
  • Salaried Position: Average of 40 hours per week (Starting September 1, 2026)
  • Compensation: Annual starting salary of $37,440
  • Benefits:
    • Wellness Dollars of $2,450 annually
    • Pension Contribution up to 3% match
    • PTO (10 Days), paid holidays, life and long-term disability insurance, other leave according to policy
  • Flexible Schedule: Due to the need to be present on Sundays, this position will include a weekly rest day to be determined with their supervisor and the head of staff
  • FLSA: Exempt

Essential Functions:

  • Facility Cleaning and Care: The church custodian shall be responsible for the day to day cleaning needs and general care of Calvary Lutheran Church. They shall work in conjunction with the Preschool Custodian to attend the needs of Preschool.
  • Groundskeeping: The Church Custodian shall be responsible for maintaining the grounds of Calvary, including, but not limited to, lawn care, snow shoveling, and other seasonal needs.
  • Space Management for Events: The Church Custodian will be responsible for preparing and resetting spaces as required for events.
  • Building Systems Management: Will develop a general knowledge of the building systems and work with the Church Administrator to manage them.
  • Required Meetings: The Church Custodian shall actively participate in weekly staff meetings, all-staff meetings, and other meetings as requested.
  • Funerals, Weddings, and Special Events: the church custodian shall be present for custodial needs at funerals, weddings, and special events as required.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Working in conjunction with the Church Administrator to maintain a list regarding maintenance and repair needs.
  • Attending to the monthly, quarterly, and annual checklist of facility needs.
  • Working in collaboration with the church staff as we collectively tend to the mission and ministry of Calvary Lutheran Church.
  • Manage supply needs in conjunction with the office staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An ability to respect and work with people from all walks of life.
  • Availability to work Sundays as ministry programing requires.
  • Willingness to learn and expand their knowledge in accordance with the needs of the church.
  • Organization and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage work expectations and stay on task while working alone.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift (up to 50lbs), and move continually during work hours.
  • An ability to work on a team where collaboration and support are uplifted as core values.
  • Must pass a background check as required by policy for all Calvary Employees.
  • Have faith in Jesus and a willingness to share that faith with others.
