What is the difference between Church Video vs Church Media Coordinator?

AspectChurch VideoChurch Media Coordinator

Required SkillsVideo operation, basic editing, equipment setupMedia management, technical skills, content creation
Work EnvironmentChurch sanctuary, event spacesChurch offices, media rooms, production areas

While both roles involve media in a church setting, a Church Video specialist primarily focuses on operating video equipment during services, whereas a Church Media Coordinator oversees all media aspects, including planning, content management, and technical support. The Media Coordinator role often requires broader skills and responsibilities, making it more comprehensive in church media operations.

What does a church video technician do?

A Church Video Technician is responsible for managing and operating the video equipment used during church services and events. This includes setting up cameras, projectors, and video switchers, as well as handling live streaming and recording of sermons or special events. They also edit video content for online sharing and ensure that all visuals run smoothly during services. Their work helps enhance the worship experience for both in-person and online congregations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a church video technician?

To thrive as a Church Video Technician, you need a solid understanding of video production, camera operation, and audiovisual technology, often supported by experience or coursework in media or communications. Familiarity with video switchers, streaming platforms, editing software (like Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro), and live production systems is typically required. Strong teamwork, adaptability, and clear communication are essential soft skills for coordinating with worship leaders and volunteers. These skills ensure seamless worship experiences, effective message delivery, and high-quality video content for both in-person and online audiences.

What are some common challenges faced by church video team members and how can they be addressed?

Church video team members often encounter challenges such as tight schedules, limited resources, and adapting to last-minute changes during live events or services. Effective communication and flexibility are key, as the team frequently collaborates with pastors, worship leaders, and technical staff to ensure smooth production. Staying organized and cross-training on different roles within the video team can help address these challenges, while regular team meetings and rehearsals can improve coordination and quality of output.

Church Snapshot
New Song Alliance Church is a growing, contemporary evangelical church located in Grand Rapids, MN (city population ~11,000). With an average attendance of 300 people across two Sunday evening services. New Song is experiencing steady momentum and has a strong sense of community.
The staff consists of two full-time pastors and seven support staff, fostering a collaborative team culture where ministry leaders are known, supported, and trusted. New Song Alliance Church is seeking a Worship and Church Life Leader who loves Jesus deeply, leads worship authentically, and shepherds people with care and intentionality. This role approaches worship as a lifestyle and form of ministry rather than performance - helping shape the spiritual life, unity, and discipleship culture of the church.
The ideal candidate combines musical and creative excellence with a pastor's heart, and enjoys developing people, cultivating leaders, and strengthening the systems that support healthy ministry. This position will provide spiritual and organizational oversight for worship, production and designated areas of church life. Each of these will contribute to a culture of discipleship, community and leadership multiplication.
Depending on the skill set and strengths of the candidate, responsibilities could include investing in volunteers, mentoring emerging leaders, supporting small groups.
Desired Qualities
We are prayerfully seeking a leader who demonstrates:
  • Deep love for Jesus and a clear call to ministry
  • Strong musical & production ability
  • Proven experience leading congregational worship
  • A heart for authentic, Spirit-led worship, not stage performance
  • Relational maturity and the ability to build trust and lead with humility
  • A desire to invest in others and raise up new leaders
  • Proven experience leading volunteer teams
  • Organizational awareness and a willingness to develop healthy systems
Job Emphasis & Responsibilities
Worship Leadership - 50%
  • Lead worship for Sunday evening services
  • Build and develop cohesive worship teams
  • Schedule musicians, vocalists, and rehearsals
  • Plan worship sets that align with the church's theology and vision
  • Identify and develop new worship leaders

Technical Production Leadership - 30%
  • Provide leadership and support for the technical and production teams
  • Create and manage tech systems for worship services
  • Generate service slides, music cues, and video content
  • Train and support tech operators and volunteers

Spiritual Leadership Development (Based on experience & gifting) - 20%
  • Mentor emerging leaders
  • Support and contribute to small group ministry and broader church life
  • Participate in care, prayer and spiritual formation responsibilities as appropriate
  • Contribute to a culture of discipleship and leadership multiplication
The Opportunity
