Team members often receive training in conflict de-escalation and emergency procedures.

Does church security get paid?

Church security personnel are often paid, especially if they are employed full-time or part-time staff, though some volunteers serve without compensation. Many security roles in churches are part-time or on a contract basis, with wages aligned to industry standards for security personnel.

What is a Church Security job?

A Church Security job involves protecting a church, its members, and property from potential threats or disturbances. Responsibilities typically include monitoring entrances, patrolling the premises, responding to emergencies, and coordinating with law enforcement when necessary. Church security personnel help maintain a safe and welcoming environment during services and events. They may also develop safety protocols and train volunteers to handle security situations effectively.

Do churches hire security guards?

Church security guards are commonly employed to ensure safety during services and events. These roles often require training in conflict resolution and sometimes security or law enforcement certifications. Churches may hire security personnel directly or contract security firms for coverage.

What are some typical challenges faced by church security personnel during services and events?

Church security staff often face challenges like managing large crowds during special services, responding discreetly to potential disruptions, and remaining vigilant while still fostering a welcoming atmosphere. Balancing security procedures with the need to be unobtrusive and respectful to attendees is a key aspect of this role. Additionally, security team members must be prepared for a wide range of incidents—from medical emergencies to lost children or suspicious behavior—and respond quickly and professionally. Collaboration with church staff, volunteers, and sometimes local law enforcement ensures a coordinated approach to safety. These dynamics create a dynamic and rewarding role for individuals passionate about protecting and serving their faith community.

Do churches pay for security?

Church security personnel are typically paid employees or volunteers, depending on the church's resources and policies. Paid security staff usually receive wages or stipends, while volunteers offer services without compensation. Some churches hire professional security companies, which charge for their services, especially for events or larger congregations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Church Security position, and why are they important?

To excel in Church Security, you need a background in safety protocols, emergency response, surveillance, and sometimes basic first aid, often supported by experience in law enforcement or security services. Familiarity with security camera systems, two-way radios, and access control tools is often required, along with certifications such as CPR, First Aid, or state-specific security licensure. Strong observation skills, discretion, calmness under pressure, and excellent interpersonal communication help build trust within the congregation. These skills are vital for maintaining a safe, welcoming environment while effectively responding to potential threats or emergencies.

Life.Church wants to make a lasting difference in your life, in our community, and in the world. Our mission is to lead people to become fully devoted followers of Christ. That's how we're able to make a difference, and it's the driving force behind everything we do.
The Security Manager is primarily responsible for leading security operations under the leadership of the Security Operations Team Leader across all Life.Church locations, including incident management, volunteer safety team development, behavioral and threat assessment initiatives, emergency management planning, physical security assessments, security audits, and contracted security vendor oversight.
This role supports the team's direction, initiatives, and ministry efforts to achieve outcomes that further Life.Church's mission and reach people for Christ.
What You'll Do
Manage Incident Reporting and Management Assessment

  • Provide recommendations and guidance for action steps that may be required by Life.Church, partnering with Security Operations, Legal, Risk, and other Central ministries when necessary.
  • Monitor security camera systems and review footage as needed to support incident investigations, verify reported activity, and document evidence.
  • Develop, lead, and manage a Behavioral and Threat Assessment program to identify, monitor, and respond to known or emerging threats against Life.Church campuses, staff, and guests.
  • Periodically review incident report data to identify trends, reduce risk, and provide recommendations to prevent recurrence.

Develop Emergency Management and Safety Training Programs
  • Lead the development, continuous improvement, and management of Emergency Management Plans and related safety resources in alignment with Security Operations priorities.
  • Create and manage information documents, training videos, e-learning resources, and in-person training initiatives that promote campus safety and preparedness.
  • Ensure new staff members receive emergency management and safety training and that all staff members periodically receive ongoing training regarding emergency management plans, security operations policies, and related safety resources.

Lead Volunteer Safety Team Development
  • Develop and manage training resources and instruction for volunteer safety teams to equip volunteers with the skills needed to support a safe church environment.
  • Establish and maintain consistent standards for volunteer safety team roles, responsibilities, and expectations in alignment with Security Operations priorities in partnership with Central Operations Ministry Team.

Oversee Physical Security Operations
  • Support the vetting and selection of off-duty law enforcement and licensed security agencies, ensuring compliance with applicable state licensing requirements and Life.Church standards.
  • Oversee contracted security officer vendors across all campuses and locations and assist with physical security duties when applicable by law and assigned by the Security Operations Central Team Leader.
  • Support the implementation of security measures for future locations and portable campuses in partnership with the Security Operations Central Team Leader, ensuring consistency with Life.Church expectations.
  • Conduct structured campus safety assessments across all locations using field observations and evaluations to identify gaps, drive corrective action, and support campus accountability.

Skills Needed to Succeed
  • Ability to self-motivate, make independent decisions, and solve problems with innovation.
  • Effective at multi-tasking and time management to meet strict deadlines while remaining flexible and open to change.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills to clearly explain complicated processes and foster partnerships.
  • Effective at process and organizational management to coordinate, structure, and provide vision to projects.
  • Strong leadership skills and understanding of developing and guiding others.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with discretion and sound judgement.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 5+ years of related experience in security operations, physical security management, threat assessment, volunteer program leadership, or a related field; multi-site or enterprise-level experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience with behavioral threat assessment methodologies and managing individuals of concern preferred.

Benefits We Offer
  • Paid parental leave, including maternity, paternity, and adoption leave.
  • Generous employer-paid leave for the use of vacation, sick time, and other qualifying reasons.
