What is a children forensic interviewer?

A Children's Forensic Interviewer is a trained professional who conducts interviews with children who may be victims or witnesses of abuse, neglect, or other crimes. Their primary role is to gather accurate and reliable information in a manner that is sensitive, non-leading, and developmentally appropriate. These interviews are often used as part of investigations by law enforcement or child protective services, and the information collected may be used in court proceedings. Forensic interviewers work to ensure the child's safety and comfort while minimizing trauma during the process.

What are children forensic interview jobs?

Child forensic interview jobs focus on questioning children about traumas they may have experienced and crimes they may have seen. As part of this service, you may investigate the child's history and current situation, question their family members, and carefully interrogate them to obtain information while causing as little distress as possible. Child forensic interviewers frequently help support children after a traumatizing event, testify in court proceedings, write reports on individual cases, and work on-call to provide rapid help and support when needed. You often work together with other caregivers and supporters to process cases in a multi-disciplinary approach.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a children forensic interviewer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Children Forensic Interviewer, you need a background in psychology, social work, or criminal justice, often supported by specialized training in forensic interviewing of children. Familiarity with recording equipment, case management systems, and adherence to protocols such as the National Children's Alliance standards are essential. Strong soft skills include empathy, active listening, and the ability to build trust and rapport with children in sensitive situations. These skills and qualifications ensure interviews are conducted ethically and effectively, preserving the integrity of evidence while minimizing trauma for child victims.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in a children forensic interview role, and how are they addressed?

Children Forensic Interviewers often encounter challenges such as building trust with child victims, managing emotional responses, and ensuring interviews are legally sound and developmentally appropriate. To address these, interviewers receive specialized training in trauma-informed techniques and child development, work closely with multidisciplinary teams (including law enforcement, social workers, and mental health professionals), and follow strict protocols to minimize re-traumatization. Ongoing supervision and peer support are also integral in helping interviewers manage the emotional impact of the work.

Job description

Status: Part-Time | Closing Date: Open Until Filled
Forensic Interview Specialist
The Forensic Interview Specialist steps into a highly impactful role, conducting specialized, developmentally sensitive, and legally sound forensic interviews of children and vulnerable adults. Core responsibilities center on utilizing the nationally recognized NICHD Protocol to gather accurate information in a neutral, non-leading, and deeply trauma-informed manner. Acting as a critical bridge to justice, this specialist collaborates closely with a Multidisciplinary Team (MDT)-including law enforcement, DCFS, prosecutors, and medical providers-to ensure interview practices withstand strict scrutiny in both investigative and judicial settings.
Additionally, the specialist drives case success by participating in weekly case staffing, monthly MDT case reviews, and statewide peer reviews to maintain the highest standard of quality assurance. Technical and legal duties include maintaining meticulous case documentation, managing recordings under strict evidentiary standards, and providing professional courtroom testimony regarding protocol adherence when subpoenaed. Because this vital work involves regular exposure to emotionally distressing content and child abuse disclosures, candidates must bring a high level of emotional resilience, professional boundaries, and consistent self-regulation.
Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, child development, criminal justice, behavioral science, or a closely related field. This is supplemented by a preference for three (3) years of professional experience in child welfare, criminal justice, forensic interviewing, victim services, or behavioral health. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered. Applicants must hold a valid Utah driver's license, pass a background check, and be ready to complete a nationally recognized NICHD forensic interview training program within six (6) months of hire.
This part-time position offers competitive hourly pay based on the Uintah County pay scale. All county employees enjoy full access to Uintah County's award-winning wellness program. This includes fun team activities, convenient on-site health fairs and educational seminars, and full access to our premier on-site wellness center equipped with top-tier gym equipment to support your personal health and work-life balance.
