Job description

Job Overview:

A Child Life Specialist is a trained healthcare professional whose role is to improve patient and family centered care while reducing the stress and anxiety that can be associated with hospitalization.

Essential Duties:

  • Plans activities and interventions to aid pediatric patients in coping with hospitalization
  • Assists patients in the continuation of normal growth and development during hospitalization
  • Uses appropriate teaching materials to prepare children/families for procedures and hospitalization
  • Makes appropriates referrals to outside organizations
  • Describes sensory experiences, sequence of events timing and duration of procedures in developmentally appropriate language
  • Collaborates with hospital personnel in identifying and managing patient's psychosocial needs, including making appropriate referrals.
  • Participates in unit rounds, patient care conferences and inter-disciplinary rounds.

Job requirements: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Child Life or Recreation Therapy Child Development Education.
  • Successful completion of a Clinical Internship in Child Life is required.
  • One year of experience preferred. 
  • Child Life Certification to be obtained within one (1) year of hire.
