How much do certified interconnect designer jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 4, 2026, the average yearly pay for certified interconnect designer in the United States is $83,148.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $58,000.00 and $109,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a certified interconnect designer?

To thrive as a Certified Interconnect Designer, you need expertise in PCB layout design, knowledge of electronics manufacturing processes, and a certification such as CID from IPC. Familiarity with CAD tools like Altium Designer, Mentor Graphics, or OrCAD, as well as understanding IPC standards and documentation systems, is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help ensure collaboration with engineering teams and manufacturers. These skills are essential to producing reliable, manufacturable circuit designs that meet industry standards and client requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by certified interconnect designers when working on complex PCB layouts, and how are these typically addressed?

Certified Interconnect Designers often encounter challenges such as managing high-density component placement, ensuring signal integrity, and adhering to stringent manufacturing constraints. To address these, designers use advanced PCB design software to optimize layouts, collaborate closely with electrical engineers to verify design requirements, and stay up-to-date with industry standards like IPC specifications. Regular design reviews and clear communication with fabrication teams are also key practices to minimize errors and ensure manufacturability.

What is the difference between Certified Interconnect Designer vs PCB Designer?

AspectCertified Interconnect DesignerPCB Designer
CertificationsTypically holds certifications like CID or CID+ from IPCMay hold certifications like IPC CID or other PCB design certifications
Work EnvironmentDesigning high-speed interconnects, signal integrity, and PCB layoutsCreating PCB layouts, schematics, and component placement
Industry UsageElectronics, telecommunications, aerospace, and defenseConsumer electronics, industrial equipment, and embedded systems

The Certified Interconnect Designer focuses on designing complex interconnects and ensuring signal integrity, often requiring specialized certifications. PCB Designers primarily create printed circuit board layouts and schematics. While both roles involve PCB design, the CID role emphasizes high-speed and high-frequency interconnects, making it more specialized in signal integrity and advanced design techniques.

What is a certified interconnect designer?

Certified Interconnect Designers (CIDs) are professionals who have demonstrated expertise in designing printed circuit board (PCB) interconnections according to industry standards. They have earned certification through the IPC organization, which ensures they understand best practices in PCB layout, documentation, and manufacturability. CIDs play a crucial role in electronics manufacturing by ensuring that PCB designs are reliable, manufacturable, and meet safety and quality requirements. Their knowledge helps companies reduce design errors, lower production costs, and improve product performance.
