What are some common challenges Ceramics Assistants face when supporting studio operations?

Ceramics Assistants often juggle multiple responsibilities, such as preparing clay, maintaining studio equipment, and assisting with kiln firings, which can be physically demanding and require strong attention to detail. Managing time efficiently during busy workshop periods or exhibitions can also be challenging, as priorities may shift quickly. Additionally, ensuring safety protocols are followed and keeping the workspace organized are crucial tasks that require vigilance and teamwork. However, overcoming these challenges helps build valuable skills for advancing within the ceramics or broader arts field.

What are Ceramics Assistants?

Ceramics Assistants are support staff who help ceramic artists or in ceramics studios with tasks such as preparing clay, maintaining tools and equipment, glazing, firing kilns, and cleaning workspaces. They may also assist with organizing materials, setting up for classes, and helping with the production of ceramic pieces. Their role is crucial in ensuring the smooth operation of a ceramics studio and often provides hands-on experience for those interested in pursuing a career in ceramics or pottery.

We are design-led, with the mission of creating products of beauty and integrity, while designing, manufacturing, and running our business in a way that's better for society and our planet. Our products are designed, manufactured, and sold in our two California factories and five showrooms, ensuring accountability in our process, from beginning to end. Purpose

The Dinnerware Raw Materials Generalist I supports the preparation, handling, organization, and basic processing of raw materials used in Heathโ€™s dinnerware production. This role helps ensure that clay, slip, glaze, and related materials are prepared safely, accurately, and consistently according to established procedures.

Position Summary

The Dinnerware Raw Materials Generalist I is an entry-level production role for someone who is hands-on, detail oriented, and interested in learning Heathโ€™s raw materials processes. This role supports the Raw Materials area by following recipes, preparing materials, maintaining clean and organized work areas, documenting work accurately, and learning how raw materials affect dinnerware quality and production flow.

This role works closely with experienced production employees and may support slip making, glaze making, clay preparation, wastewater support, kiln support, and general material handling depending on business needs.

Position Responsibilities

  • Support the preparation, batching, labeling, and movement of dinnerware raw materials according to established recipes, procedures, and production needs.
  • Assist with slip making tasks, including batching fresh clay or casting slip, operating equipment, collecting scrap clay for recycling, and helping maintain the balance between fresh and reclaimed materials.
  • Learn basic glaze making tasks, including identifying materials, transferring materials properly, following recipe order, measuring viscosity and specific gravity, preparing test samples, and keeping glaze materials organized.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety standards in raw materials work areas, including pressure washing, cleaning equipment, organizing storage areas, and preparing material bins for transfer.
  • Support kiln-related work as assigned, including loading, unloading, counting pieces, recording information, and assisting with basic kiln preparation or follow-up under direction.
  • Follow all safety procedures, including safe equipment use, forklift procedures if certified, dust collection practices, material handling requirements, and PPE requirements.
  • Maintain accurate production records, batch information, counts, labels, and other documentation as assigned.
  • Communicate material concerns, quality issues, safety concerns, or equipment problems.

Qualifications

  • No specific degree required. Equivalent experience in manufacturing, ceramics, warehouse, food production, materials handling, lab work, or hands-on craft production is helpful.
  • No prior ceramics production experience required. Previous experience in production, material handling, glaze making, clay processing, slip batching, or mold making is helpful.
  • Comfort working in a hands-on plant environment.
  • Basic math, measuring, and documentation skills.
  • Willingness to learn from experienced team members during a training period.
  • Respect for quality, craftsmanship, safety, and cleanliness.
  • Ability to use a computer and complete basic production records and documentation.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written work instructions in English.

Physical and Mental Requirements

This role requires regular physical work in a production environment, including:

  • Ability to lift 20 to 50 pounds repeatedly throughout the day.
  • Standing for most of the workday.
  • Regular walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motion.
  • Use of hands, wrists, arms, shoulders, and body positioning to move, prepare, and inspect materials.
  • Ability to work safely around production equipment, raw materials, dust, water, kilns, and other plant conditions.
  • Mental focus, accuracy, and follow-through when measuring, batching, labeling, documenting, and handling materials.

Visual Acuity Requirements

The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as preparing and inspecting materials, identifying small defects or inconsistencies, operating equipment, using measurement devices, and checking the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned. The worker will also need visual acuity, including color, depth perception, and field vision, to inspect materials, assess quality, operate equipment safely, and perform work in a production environment.

Work Environment and Hours

  • Average hours/week: 40 regularly scheduled hours per week
  • Work schedule: Monday through Friday. Overtime may be available and required. Shift times TBD.
