CERAMICS PROGRAM INSTRUCTORDEPARTMENT: PARKS AND RECREATIONJOB CLASSIFICATION: PART TIME PAY GRADE PT3PAY GRADES LINK GENERAL PURPOSEUnder the direct supervision of the FitCity Programs Supervisor, a Ceramics Instructor will be responsible for planning, teaching and assisting patrons of all ages in ceramics classes. The instructor will encourage creativity and artistic expression, demonstrate safe and effective use of ceramics materials, tools and equipment and foster a welcoming, supportive and engaging learning environment. The instructor will provide guidance to participants of varying skill levels while promoting creativity, confidence and development of individual artistic skills.  ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSPlans and teaches ceramic classes for patrons of all ages and varying skill levels.Encourages creativity and self-expression while providing patient, supportive and age appropriate guidance to participants.Interacts courteously and respectfully with all patrons, staff, volunteers and community members.Provides instruction in fundamental and advanced techniques, including hand building, pinch pots, sculpting, glazing and other techniques as applicable.Demonstrates proper use and care of tools and other studio equipment. Operates and maintains kilns, including safe loading, firing, and unloading of ceramics.Ensures studio cleanliness, safety and proper storage and disposal of ceramic materials.Demonstrates proper use, cleaning and care of ceramics tools supplies and equipment.Maintains inventory of supplies and reports needed items to supervisor/ coordinator.Adapts instruction and activities to accommodate participants of different ages, abilities and experience levels.Assists with special events as needed.Must be able to meet attendance and punctuality requirements for this position. Must abide by all city policies and procedures. Performs other related duties as assigned. POSITION QUALIFICATIONSEducation & Experience: High school diploma or equivalent. Coursework or certification in ceramics and previous experience working as an instructor strongly preferred.Must have a flexible schedule and be willing to work as needs arrive including extra during special events. Team oriented, good communication skills and ability to work well with other employees. Patient, creative and enthusiastic with the ability to create a welcoming and inclusive learning environment for participants of all ages and abilities.License and Certifications:Valid Utah state Driver's LicenseCurrent CPR and First Aid certification required, or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire.Working Conditions & Physical Demands:Ability to stand for extended periods .Must be able to bend, stoop, reach, and lift up to 20 lbs regularly.Must be able to safely work with ceramics tools, equipment, clay, glazes and kiln-related materials.Work is primarily in classroomApplicant will be required to submit to a criminal background check and drug test
