ASSISTANT CEMETERY SEXTON

DEPARTMENT: PARKS AND RECREATION

JOB CLASSIFICATION: FULL TIME

GENERAL PURPOSE

Under the general supervision of the Buildings & Grounds Manager and the Cemetery Sexton

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • As directed by the Cemetery Sexton, supervises and performs the following cemetery duties:
    • Provides supervision of subordinate employees; schedules and assigns work; trains employees in equipment operation and performance of duties; conducts employee performance evaluations; hires seasonal /part-time employees; reviews and approves subordinates time cards.
    • Supervises and performs maintenance of landscaped grounds, including inspecting, mowing, weeding, and tree, shrub and turf trimming, and vegetation planting and removal; removes and disposes of old grave decorations.
    • Installs, maintains and repairs irrigation systems; operates irrigation controllers and sets schedules.
    • Applies pesticides and fertilizers.
    • Operates light to heavy equipment including backhoe, mini-excavator, dump truck, tractor, riding mower, sod cutter, soil tamper and snow blower. Coordinates and performs maintenance and repair of equipment.
    • Operates hand and power tools including push mower, line trimmer, chain saw, shovel.
    • Opens and closes burial sites; installs and sets headstones; sets forms and pours concrete for headstone bases; repairs broken headstones; fills around and levels headstones and grave positions.
    • Assists the Cemetery Sexton in record keeping, directing patrons to grave sites, providing information about services and fees, directing the work of monument and vault companies and other cemetery management practices as required.
  • Must be able to meet attendance and punctuality requirements for this position. Must abide by all city policies and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education and Experience: Graduation from high school plus two (2) years of experience in cemetery operation and landscape maintenance.
  • Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • Working knowledge of regulations and practices relating to cemetery management.
    • Working knowledge of basic office administration and equipment.
    • Working knowledge of landscape maintenance; including use of fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides.
    • Skill in operating a wide variety of light to heavy power equipment.
    • Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making recommendations.
    • Ability to supervise and direct the work of others; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies;
    • Ability to deal with the public in a pleasant, courteous and calm manner; ability to effectively solve problems and concerns of the cemetery patrons;
    • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
    • Able to work within a budget.
    • Must be available to respond to calls as needed after regular working hours, on weekends and on Memorial Day.
  • Special Requirements:
    • Must possess a valid Utah Commercial Driver License (CDL) or must be able to obtain one within a time frame set forth by the city.
    • Must have Utah State Pesticide Applicators License in Ornamental and Turf Category or pass exam within 1 year of hire date.
