What is a CDL Program Director?

CDL Program Directors are professionals responsible for overseeing commercial driver’s license (CDL) training programs, typically at educational institutions or private training schools. They manage curriculum development, instructor supervision, regulatory compliance, and student enrollment processes. Their main goal is to ensure the program meets state and federal requirements while preparing students for successful careers as commercial drivers. Program directors often collaborate with industry partners and stay updated on transportation regulations to keep the program relevant and effective.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CDL Program Director?

To thrive as a CDL Program Director, you need in-depth knowledge of commercial driver training, regulatory compliance, and program management, usually backed by relevant industry experience and sometimes a bachelor's degree. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, and commercial vehicle operation tools is typical. Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help foster effective instruction and maintain program standards. These skills ensure the program runs efficiently, remains compliant, and produces well-trained, safe commercial drivers.

CDL Drivers Opportunity

Are you looking for a challenge? Looking for an innovative organization and the opportunity to learn and grow professionally? We can help! Terrestris Global Solutions is seeking reliable and safety-focused CDL Drivers to support government contracting operations on a temporary, as-needed basis. This role supports mission-critical logistics activities involving the transport and repositioning of a variety of government and contractor-owned vehicles and equipment, including heavy equipment carriers, refrigeration vehicles, passenger vehicles, fuel tankers, and school buses.

At Terrestris, we leverage technology to create better mission outcomes through better human performance. We form strong client and team relationships through transparency and strive to create an environment where our team can let their excellence shine through. By finding, developing, and incorporating new ideas, we provide memorable services. Rooted in the USMC values of honor, courage, and commitment, Terrestris seeks to deliver extraordinary value to the American people by helping the Government become more efficient and effective.

The CDL Driver will safely operate and transport a variety of vehicles and equipment, including heavy machinery, refrigerated trucks, passenger vehicles, and fuel tankers—in support of government contracting operations. While generally our vehicles will not have cargo, when there is cargo, the CDL Driver will be responsible for securing the cargo in compliance with all DOT regulations and safety standards, conducting pre- and post-trip inspections, maintaining accurate logs and documentation, and coordinating with dispatch to meet mission requirements. The CDL Driver will also adapt to changing operational needs, ensure proper handling of specialized or hazardous materials when applicable, and uphold Terrestris Global Solutions' commitment to safety, reliability, and mission excellence.

A typical day for a CDL Driver will include:

  • Safely operate CDL-class vehicles, including heavy equipment transporters, refrigerated trucks, passenger vehicles, buses, and fuel tankers
  • Secure various types of cargo in compliance with DOT and company regulations
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure vehicle safety and operational readiness
  • Maintain accurate logs, inspection reports, and delivery documentation
  • Adhere to all federal, state, and local transportation laws and safety standards
  • Coordinate with dispatch and operations teams to meet delivery schedules and mission requirements
  • Respond to changing operational needs with flexibility and professionalism
  • Ensure proper handling and transport of hazardous materials (if applicable and certified)

What qualifications do you look for?

  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) (Class A or B, as required)
  • Clean driving record with a strong commitment to safety
  • Experience transporting heavy equipment, vehicles, or specialized cargo
  • Ability to operate a variety of transport vehicles, including tankers and refrigerated units
  • Knowledge of DOT regulations and compliance requirements
  • Ability to lift, secure, and manage heavy loads
  • Strong attention to detail and reliability
  • Eligible to gain access to U.S. military base (U.S. citizen, authorized non-U.S. citizen, clean background, etc.)

We will be extra impressed if you have:

  • Hazmat and/or Tanker endorsements
  • Passenger endorsement
  • Experience supporting government or military operations
  • Familiarity with load securement standards for heavy equipment
  • Basic mechanical knowledge for minor troubleshooting

Work Environment & Schedule:

  • Temporary, on-call/as-needed basis depending on contract requirements
  • Work may include extended hours, weekends, and travel
  • Outdoor and field-based work in varying conditions
  • What kind of benefits does Terrestris Offer?

We offer outstanding benefits including health, financial, and retirement benefits, as well as paid leave, professional development, tuition assistance, and work-life programs. Our award programs acknowledge employees for exceptional performance and superior demonstration of our service standards. Full-time and part-time employees working at least 20 hours a week on a regular basis are eligible to participate in our benefit programs. Other offerings may be provided for employees not within this category.

Terrestris is an Equal Opportunity Employer (EOE). Qualified applicants are considered for employment without regard to age, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, disability, or veteran status. Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S.
