Job description

Job Summary

The General Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing a variety of routine maintenance and repair tasks to ensure safety, cleanliness, and functionality of Hillside properties. This includes basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and HVAC duties, as well as preventative maintenance and emergency repairs. The technician works closely with management and staff to maintain a safe and comfortable living space for our youth, families and staff.ย 

This is a full-time (40 hours) position on primarily a Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm schedule with flexibility needed to be in the on-call rotation. Note that on-call may require coverage on nights, weekends, and holidays.
This position is based at our Crestwood Campus in Rochester and primarily supports maintaining our facilities in the Rochester & Buffalo areas, but may require travel to any Hillside location.ย 
Travel on the job will be in an agency vehicle.

Essential Job functions

  • Troubleshoot and repair buildings and mechanicals including but not limited to walls, ceilings, floors, windows, doors, plumbing, electrical, painting, basic HVAC and carpentry.

  • Troubleshoot and repair furnishings and appliances.ย 

  • Anticipate and introduce solutions to issues beyond day to day concerns.

  • Render service to facility as needed during off hours, weekends and holidays based on "on call" schedule. Follow up on emergency calls with permanent solutions.

  • Maintain all grounds including but not limited to fall & spring cleanups, tree and shrub trimming, weeding, edging, mulching and snow removal.

  • Proficient in managing undocumented repairs with appropriate communication.

  • Assist Facility Manager with all required inspections and fire drills, and as needed.

  • Assist other Hillside departments as needed, including but not limited to deliveries, cleaning, moving and set up of equipment and furniture, special events and special projects.

  • While this job description covers many aspects of the role, employees may be required to perform other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of facilities experience required, including facilities or construction trades experience, HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, electric, drywall, etc.

Special Requirements

  • Unrestricted, valid NYS driver's license for minimum of 1 year with a clean driving record and minimum insurance coverage that meets agency standards.ย 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

In addition to demonstrating the Hillside Professional Competencies ofย Communicates Effectively, Personal Excellence, Cultural Competence, Builds and Leverages Relationships, and Optimizes Decision Making, the following occupational competencies must be demonstrated:

  • Knowledge of basic repairs techniques in plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and HVAC systems.ย 

  • Familiarity with tools, materials, and methods used in general maintenance and construction.

  • Understanding of safety codes, fire regulations, environmental health standards and Funders requirements in residential care setting.ย 

  • Skilled in managing multiple maintenance requests and prioritizing urgent repairs efficiently.

  • Ability to perform tasks with minimal supervision and take initiative in identifying and resolving maintenance issues.

  • The following physical demands are required:

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS

May be required to drive up to 4 hours per day based on the needs of the assigned region.ย 

May occasionally be required to lift up to and in excess of 80 lbs. utilizing a two-person team lift and/or with the aid of carts, dollies, etc. May be exposed to winter elements during snow removal and salt application. May be exposed to saw and dry wall dust, solvents, lubricants and pool maintenance chemicals.

$18.50 Minimum pay rate, $26.00 Maximum pay rate, based on experience.
