What Maintenance Engineering contributes to Cardinal Health?

Engineering is responsible for performing research and analyses to develop design options for components, products, systems and processes. Maintenance Engineering is responsible for developing processes, layouts and associated tools. Identifies, analyzes and implements new or existing technology to optimize business processes. Drives continuous improvement to reduce cost, cycle time, improve quality and increase throughput. Maintains all robotics and material handling equipment and directs external resources/contractors as required.

Job Summary

The Maintenance Engineering Manager will be responsible for hiring, training, developing, and leading a high-performing team of supervisors and technicians. You will build a collaborative culture focused on continuous improvement and exceeding customer expectations. You will blend strategic planning, financial management, and leadership development while managing preventative maintenance programs, coordinating with operations teams, and responding to emergencies that require quick, decisive action to safely minimize downtime.

Location

This is an on-site position (5 days per week), based out of a Distribution Center in Whitestown Indiana.

Responsibilities

  • Promote safe working conditions by eliminating potential equipment safety hazards and ensuring team commitment to all safety procedures and use of Personal Protective Equipment while maintaining equipment.
  • Ownership in defect handling and breakdown elimination. Conduct preventive and corrective maintenance activities to ensure the efficient and reliable operation of equipment and machinery.
  • Be on call to troubleshoot / diagnose problems and develop and execute maintenance plans to minimize downtime and disruptions.
  • Analyze data to identify trends, diagnose problems and develop solutions to improve equipment reliability and performance
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders (Network Operations, Finance, Sourcing, HR, etc.), site leadership and suppliers to develop and execute maintenance plans that are aligned with business strategy.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, schematics, and procedures to support maintenance activities.
  • Participate in, and coordinate, ongoing training and development programs to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Build strong teams by providing opportunities for growth and development.
  • Champion innovation, simplification, and standardization of operating procedures, methodologies, and processes.

Develop a continuous improvement ethic in your team by following a daily process that is data driven and focused on root cause elimination

Manages department operations and supervises professional employees, front line supervisors and/or business support staff

Participates in the development of policies and procedures to achieve specific goals

Ensures employees operate within guidelines

Interacts with subordinates, peers, customers, and suppliers at various management levels; may interact with senior management

Interactions normally involve resolution of issues related to operations and/or projects

Gains consensus from various parties involved

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience, preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (Industrial or related field), or equivalent work experience, preferred
  • Possess a strong engineering background with a concentration in distribution operations preferred
  • 3+ years of direct leadership/supervisory experience, preferred
  • Practical knowledge of PLC-based systems, sensors, VFDs/servos, and troubleshooting in conveyor + ASRS (AutoStore) environments
  • CMMS-driven preventive/predictive maintenance, asset criticality, MTBF/MTTR, and lifecycle planning
  • Ability to define, track, and improve OEE (availability, performance, quality) for conveyors and automation, and tie losses to maintenance actions
  • Hands-on experience with multitemperature distribution centers, HVAC/refrigeration (incl. CO systems), condensation/frost mitigation, and temperature excursion risk
  • Strong background in OSHA, LOTO, machine guarding, electrical safety, and working safely around automation and cold environments
  • Ability to connect the performance (throughput) of a machine to the flow of a process
  • Integrate machine and system performance into the performance of the facility and the business
  • Possess strong analytical skills
  • Possess strong communication and relationship building skills
  • Experience in project management
  • Experience working with Material Handling Equipment (MHE) integrators
  • Can hire a team and hold individuals accountable for results
  • Be a team player, results focused, and operate with a sense of urgency
