Employer & Industry UsageUsed in finance, accounting, and investment contexts to denote valuable resourcesUsed in finance to describe professionals managing investment portfolios

While a Capital Asset refers to a valuable resource owned by an organization or individual, an Asset Manager is a professional responsible for managing investment assets. The two are related but serve different functions: one is a resource, the other is a role focused on optimizing asset performance.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals managing capital assets, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals overseeing capital assets often face challenges such as maintaining accurate asset records, coordinating across departments for asset utilization, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations. Managing the lifecycle of assets—from acquisition to disposal—requires strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Utilizing asset management software and establishing clear communication channels with finance, operations, and maintenance teams can help streamline processes and mitigate potential issues.

What is a Capital Asset?

A capital asset is a significant piece of property such as land, buildings, machinery, equipment, or investments that a business or individual owns for long-term use. Capital assets are not intended for sale in the regular course of business but are used to generate income or support operations. They are typically subject to depreciation or appreciation over time and can have tax implications when sold. Examples include real estate, vehicles, and stocks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Capital Asset Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Capital Asset Manager, you need expertise in asset management, financial analysis, and a background in accounting or finance, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with asset management software, ERP systems, and certifications such as Certified Asset Manager (CAM) or CPA are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you optimize asset value and coordinate with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure accurate tracking, valuation, and optimization of capital assets, which are crucial for an organization's long-term financial health.

With $75B+ in assets under management, the firm constructs customized investment portfolios for its clients tapping into its deep network of partnerships with what we consider exceptional asset managers across all major asset classes. Clients include Syracuse University, Sesame Workshop, INSEAD Business School, New York’s Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Symphony, Eton College, Colorado College, several Oxford and Cambridge University Colleges, several family offices around the world, and senior executives from leading global investment firms. The firm employs more than 400 people across its eight offices located in Boston, New York, London, San Francisco, Paris, Singapore, Hong Kong and Dallas.

Partners’ Capital is diverse and inclusive, in people and in thought. Our meritocracy is enabled by fostering a truly inclusive and collaborative culture. We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer where diverse perspectives, backgrounds and experiences are valued.

Position Description

The Investment Senior Associate located in San Francisco will be a key contributor to our 25-person Private Equity and Real Estate team. As a sophisticated global investment firm with nearly 25 years of private markets experience, we seek new team members who are dynamic and comfortable working in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment.

The Partners Capital Research team is the engine for identifying and underwriting attractive investment opportunities for inclusion in client portfolios, as well as the deployment of our discretionary investment vehicles. Within our broader Research team, the Private Equity and Real Estate team manages the Firm’s investment program and external manager relationships across buyouts, growth equity, venture capital, and real estate and infrastructure. The primary goal of the Private Equity and Real Estate research team is to deliver high absolute returns over the long term by partnering with top-tier managers. The team also supports the growth of the business through innovation, creativity and continuous improvement of our investment program in the face of a competitive and rapidly changing market environment.

This role will primarily be focused on investment diligence (70% allocation), with additional responsibilities (30% allocation) across portfolio management and process management:

Investment Diligence (70% Allocation)

  • Fund Diligence: This role will primarily focus on underwriting venture capital primary fund investments, with additional exposure to venture capital co-investments as well as private equity and real estate primary fund investments. Diligence activities include manager meetings, quantitative performance analysis, qualitative assessments of team, investment process and research quality, and external referencing. The diligence process culminates in a written investment presentation for team discussion and Investment Committee review, with the Senior Associate playing a lead role in drafting and driving its development.
  • Asset Class Research: Support research on investment opportunities, industry trends, and market dynamics across the venture capital asset class. Contribute to investment theme ideation and creation of firm intellectual property.

Portfolio Monitoring & Process Management (30% Allocation)

  • Portfolio Monitoring: Monitor approved investments through quarterly reporting reviews, semi-annual manager meetings, and tracking new investments, exits, and manager updates. Attend Annual Meetings for managers within coverage responsibilities.
  • Process Management: Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to support legal and operational diligence alongside investment diligence and oversee fund closing processes for approved opportunities. Additional responsibilities include preparing materials for our monthly Asset Class Team-Client CIO meeting, investment database support, and marketing support.

Other

  • In addition to the above, this role will, for variety, include other activities and projects, such as researching and improving our portfolio construction knowledge and approach, assisting with business development, or helping to develop our technological capabilities. Key responsibilities may be assessed and are subject to change from time to time based on the needs of the business.

Qualifications / Attributes

  • Undergraduate degree with a strong track record of academic achievement.
  • 4-7 years of prior work experience in a professional services role (e.g., private equity or venture capital LP investing, venture capital or growth equity direct investing, investment banking, management consulting, or corporate strategy).
  • Demonstrated interest in technology, investing, and the venture capital industry.
  • Aptitude for rigorous qualitative and quantitative analysis delivered via an answer-first communication style.
  • Excellent problem-solving and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong work ethic, good attention to detail, and ability to multi-task.
  • Team player attitude with a desire to work on a wide range of projects.
  • High intellectual curiosity and willingness to contribute to the overall success of the business.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook).
