Job Summary
Identifies and abstracts cancer cases for accredited Cancer Registry.
Certification: Oncology Data Specialist
This Abstractor will be responsible for overseeing tumor boards, case finding, patient follow-up, looking up patients in Epic, follow-up on survival analyses, including phone calls to cancer patients, and occasionally attending cancer conferences.

Minimum Qualifications
Education: Associates degree
Licenses/Certifications: Must obtain Certified Tumor Registrar certification within three (3) years of job entry date
Experience / Knowledge / Skills:
  • Knowledge of anatomy, medical terminology, and current cancer coding guidelines and cancer program standards from the Commission on Cancer
  • Ability to perform clerical duties using a personal computer

Principal Accountabilities
  • Reviews patient medical records to abstract data and accurately codes and enters data into cancer registry database.
  • Follows quality control standards.
  • Assists with data gathering for and attends cancer conferences.
  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
  • Demonstrates commitment to caring for every member of our community by creating compassionate and personalized experiences. Models Memorial Hermann's service standards by providing safe, caring, personalized and efficient experiences to patients and colleagues.
