Job Summary
This position provides support to three custodial zone supervisors in coordinating floor-care work, administration of daily work schedules, and monitoring work in progress by applying advanced knowledge in all phases of floor-care techniques for a variety of floor types (porous and non-porous) throughout a research environment. Additionally, it leads a team of three-floor care specialists, communicates with faculty, students, and staff members during work assignments, and solves challenges encountered during the work shift. Follows Institute safety standards and regulatory agencies.
Essential Job Duties
This position is a working position, which coordinates and cooperates with crew members performing various floor-care duties, including but not limited to the following:
  • Responsible for following all safety procedures and maintaining a safe and secure work environment.
  • Operates floor equipment such as buffers and burnishers to strip, wax, and polish different types of floor surfaces (porous and non-porous).
  • Operates carpet care equipment such as extractors, wet vacuums, and encapsulation systems to clean carpets and upholstered surfaces using various cleaning methods.
  • Trains newly hired floor-care crew members to ensure effective onboarding and knowledge of work requirements and assignments. Assist supervisors and monitors work in progress.
  • Maintain established standards of performance and be responsible for inspecting finished work and creating quality assurance reports.
  • Move furniture to clean specific areas and return to original place after floors are dry.
  • Exercises caution when working in laboratories and around research equipment.
  • Maintains a rigorous time-sensitive work schedule and communicates when there are challenges with deadlines and schedule.
  • Maintains and performs basic troubleshooting of floor equipment and performs minor repairs as needed and appropriate. Reports any equipment damage or maintenance needs for proper repairs and/ or maintenance to supervisors.
  • Submits supply requests and maintains floor equipment inventory.
  • Assist zone supervisors with timekeeping and work order records for the Floor Care shift.
  • Requires the ability to work the graveyard shift. Work hours are Monday - Friday, 11:00 pm to 7:30 am.
  • Requires the ability to work overtime when required and perform all other assigned duties.

Basic Qualifications
  • High school education or equivalent, and ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with all levels of customers.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive responsibility and work experience in custodial/floor-care, with 3 years of lead or supervisory experience in an educational or hospitality facility.
  • Knowledge of steam, encapsulation, dry and bonnet cleaning techniques.
  • Must be able to work assigned work schedule (11:00 pm - 7:30 am, Monday-Friday) with potential overtime hours as needed/required.
  • A valid California Driver's license or the ability to obtain one before employment begins and maintain it throughout the course of employment. Must be able to drive Institute Vehicles under the Institute's Motor Vehicle Use policy and adhere to the policy.
  • Ability to understand and read work schedule instructions.

Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. on a regular basis and be able to bend down to clean corners by hand.

Hiring Range
$22.25 - $29.25 Per Hour
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
