Cable Procurement information

What is cable procurement?

Cable procurement is the process of sourcing, purchasing, and managing the supply of cables required for various projects or operations. This role involves identifying the right types of cables, negotiating with suppliers, ensuring timely delivery, and maintaining quality standards. Professionals in cable procurement work closely with project managers, engineers, and vendors to ensure that all cable requirements are met efficiently and cost-effectively.

What are some common challenges faced in a cable procurement role, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in cable procurement often face challenges such as fluctuating raw material prices, supply chain disruptions, and ensuring compliance with technical specifications. To address these issues, staying updated on market trends and developing strong relationships with reliable suppliers is crucial. Collaborating closely with engineering and project management teams helps ensure that purchased cables meet project requirements and delivery timelines. Additionally, effective negotiation and risk management strategies can minimize budgetary impacts from unexpected changes in costs or availability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in cable procurement?

To thrive in Cable Procurement, you need strong analytical skills, supply chain knowledge, and a degree in business, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with procurement software, ERP systems, and relevant certifications like CPSM or CIPS is typically required. Effective negotiation, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help build vendor relationships and ensure seamless operations. These skills ensure cost-effective sourcing, minimize supply risks, and maintain uninterrupted project workflows.

What is the difference between Cable Procurement vs Cable Purchasing?

AspectCable ProcurementCable Purchasing
FocusStrategic sourcing, supplier negotiations, contract managementOrder placement, price negotiation, transaction execution
ResponsibilitiesDeveloping supplier relationships, ensuring quality and complianceProcessing purchase orders, managing delivery schedules
Work EnvironmentProcurement departments, strategic planning teamsPurchasing departments, logistics teams
CredentialsSupply chain certifications, procurement trainingBasic purchasing or procurement training, negotiation skills

While both roles involve acquiring cables, Cable Procurement focuses on strategic sourcing and supplier management, whereas Cable Purchasing handles order execution and transaction details. Understanding these differences helps organizations optimize their supply chain processes effectively.

Job description

Primary Responsibilities

Electrical Integration

  • Own the electrical implementation of assigned semiconductor handler modules throughout their entire product lifecycle, including prototype development, production release, manufacturing support, field support, and sustaining engineering.

  • Develop and integrate electrical systems for complex industrial equipment, including cable and harness assemblies, high-flex cable systems, e-chain routing, industrial power distribution, electrical protection, control hardware, sensors, safety systems, and associated electrical components.

  • Define cable routing to comply with NFPA 79 requirements while minimizing electrical noise (EMI), crosstalk, and supporting long-term system reliability.

  • Follow company harness and wiring standards and participate in their continuous improvement in coordination with other engineering groups.

  • Coordinate wire harness manufacturing with production, provide technical support during fabrication, and resolve manufacturing issues.

  • Coordinate procurement of prototype electrical components and ensure materials are available to support prototype build schedules.

Technical Leadership

  • Lead the daily technical activities of wiring engineers and electrical designers.

  • Assign and prioritize engineering work.

  • Mentor junior engineers.

  • Drive technical issues to closure.

  • Coordinate engineering activities across multiple disciplines.

  • Escalate major technical risks and system-level issues to engineering management when appropriate.

Engineering Documentation & Configuration Management

  • Use Zuken E3 as the primary electrical CAD platform to develop and maintain schematics, cable documentation, wire lists, harness drawings, and related engineering documentation.

  • Maintain accurate electrical documentation and ensure the electrical portion of the Oracle product BOM remains synchronized with mechanical, firmware, vision, manufacturing, and released product documentation across multiple projects.

  • Support Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), product releases, revision control, and configuration management to ensure released documentation accurately reflects the current product configuration.

Design Reviews

  • Review electrical drawings for completeness, consistency, manufacturability, and compliance with company standards before release.

  • Prepare technical review packages.

  • Schedule and lead electrical design reviews.

  • Document review findings, engineering decisions, and action items.

  • Drive review action items to completion and ensure all required documentation is complete prior to product release.

Project Coordination

  • Coordinate engineering progress across multiple engineers and projects.

  • Track engineering deliverables, project milestones, and release schedules.

  • Communicate project status, technical risks, and schedule impacts to engineering management.

  • Remove technical roadblocks affecting project execution.

  • Support manufacturing, system integration, field service, and sustaining engineering throughout the product lifecycle.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or MS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.

  • Minimum 5 years of designing complex industrial electrical systems, 8 years is preferred

  • Hands-on experience with Zuken E3 is highly desired.

  • Experience with Altium Designer and AutoCAD (or DraftSight) is highly desirable.

Strong knowledge of:

  • Industrial wiring systems, cable assemblies, harness design, connector selection, high-flex cable systems, and e-chain applications.

  • AC and DC 3 phase power distribution, circuit protection, relays, contactors, power supplies, filters, and industrial electrical components.

  • Sensors, safety systems, industrial control hardware, and electrical integration.

  • Cable routing, grounding, shielding, EMI mitigation, NFPA 79, EN60204 and electrical safety.

  • Industrial automation systems, commissioning, and troubleshooting.

  • Ability to commission, configure, and troubleshoot industrial electrical equipment using vendor software tools is a plus. (Beckhoff TwinCAT, safety controller configuration tools, servo drive software).

  • Strong documentation and configuration management skills.

  • Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.

  • Ability to work effectively with electrical, firmware, mechanical, manufacturing, and systems engineering teams.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with semiconductor capital equipment or other complex automation systems.

  • Experience with robotics, motion control, or precision automation equipment.

  • Familiarity with functional safety systems.

  • Experience leading technical design.

  • Experience designing high-flex cable systems for continuously moving industrial equipment.

  • Experience supporting prototype builds, manufacturing, and field installations.
