Job description

Bus Driver

The bus driver must provide safe and efficient transportation services for all district children and personnel through a customer centered, service oriented atmosphere.

Qualifications/Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Complete state-required physical examination for Bus Drivers (after employment offer is made)
  • Meet all state requirements for Bus Drivers, including Defensive Driving, CPR, and First Aid Certification
  • Successfully complete behind-the-wheel training
  • Must pass and is subject to drug tests as required by federal and state law and the policies regarding drug testing
  • Maintain current TB testing as required by Health Department regulations
Supervisory Responsibilities:

None

Essential Functions:
  • Handle stress from traffic and students
  • Read a road map and follow directions from a map
  • Communicate effectively and work cooperatively with staff and community members to ensure a positive work environment
  • Transport only authorized students
  • Discharge students only at authorized stops
  • Sit in a driver's seat for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to tolerate environmental conditions, noise, and hazards
  • Keep an assigned schedule to provide minimal school disruptions
  • Maintain discipline and report those who do not abide by the rules
General Responsibilities:
  • Provide clean, safe, and reliable transportation to ensure students benefit from district programs and activities
  • Ensure all activities conform to State school transportation guidelines to provide a safe and secure environment
  • Full knowledge and abide all traffic laws
  • React to change and frequent interruptions in a productive and positive manner
  • Keep assigned bus clean to ensure safety, appearance, and sanitation of vehicle
  • Check bus before each operation for mechanical defects and notify the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness
  • Implement all mandatory safety regulations
  • Attend and participate in monthly bus safety meetings
  • Maintain appropriate professional appearance
  • Treat all children with respect and dignity
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality regarding student and staff information in order to remain in compliance with legal requirements and to maintain a professional work environment
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the transportation handbook or as assigned by the transportation director
Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:
  • Requires prolonged sitting
  • Ability to exit driver's seat rapidly and enter or exit near emergency door in case of an emergency
  • Requires adequate driving skills, including operating a vehicle at night
  • Performing repetitive motions, substantial movements of the wrists, hands, fingers, and/or feet
  • Tolerance to dust, fumes, and odors
  • Requires regular attendance and physical presence at the job
