Job description

School Bus Dispatcher

Drivergent Transportation is a Metro Detroit school transportation company, with over 14 years of transportation experience, looking for motivated, customer-focused individuals who want to join our team!

As a School Bus Dispatcher, you will be on the front line. It will be your responsibility to dispatch all vehicles and drivers, ensure on time performance of all services, and monitoring staff performance to ensure we exceed customer expectations. Successful Dispatchers put safety first, are reliable, can succeed in a changing environment, and are ready to work.

Location/Schedule:

  • Headquarters (Sterling Heights, MI)
  • Monday-Friday Day Shift 
  • Occasional Saturday Shift (estimated to be once per month)

General Responsibilities:

  • Directs and monitors daily assignments; schedules drivers, bus attendants, and assigns vehicles to ensure daily coverage of all routes, field trips, and charter work
  • Ensure direct and indirect daily activities of drivers and bus attendants are assigned and accomplished on time
  • Communicate all relevant details of driving assignments to drivers to ensure proper execution
  • Assist drivers with routing directions and direct them to perform special services when required
  • Handles telephone calls, emails, and radio calls
  • Responds to emergency calls, facilitates emergency response network, coordinates mechanical service repair, and assigns replacement busses and drivers when there is a problem with a route
  • Notifies district and building personnel of all changes in route assignments, emergency situations, accidents, breakdowns, or any other event that may disrupt service
  • Serves as a primary communication liaison with major contacted customers
  • Provides solutions to drop-off and pick-up problems
  • Handles back-up driver duties and performs miscellaneous clerical duties as needed
  • Completes special projects as assigned
  • Assists with supervision of day-to-day operations
  • Maintains route documentation and records (relevant contact requirements, school information, student data, route changes, relevant maps, vehicle details, bus assignments, driver details) for the purpose of providing accurate and reliable information to customers and complying with district and state requirements
  • Coordinates vehicle service and mechanical repairs with Maintenance Supervisor to assure uninterrupted service delivery
  • Maintains high compliance to dispatch standard operation procedures
  • Handles customer concerns and requests for information in an expeditious and professional manner
  • Escalates unresolved issues to management as appropriate
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED. Some college educations a plus!
  • Minimum 2 years of prior dispatch experience
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Undergo Pre-employment and random drug testing per DOT regulations
  • Have and maintain eligible driving records per all applicable client district policies and state/federal laws
  • Must pass State and Federal Criminal Background Check per MDE regulations and Client District policies
  • Ability to pass DOT physical requirements and obtain valid DOT medical card
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid Michigan Commercial Drivers License (B) with valid P and S endorsements
  • Ability to take and pass Continuing Education Class (Advanced School Bus Driver Training) every 2 years
  • Ability to multi-task in fast paced work environment
  • Extensive knowledge of traffic rules and regulations
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to operate and navigate a full size or special needs school bus
  • Ability to effectively operate a GPS
  • Ability to work outside in various climate and weather conditions
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Products (Excel, Work, Google Sheets, etc.)
  • Ability to operate two-way and emergency radio systems
  • Ability to use office machines (fax, scanner, copier, zip drive, telephone system)
  • Prior professional driving experience a plus
  • Bi-lingual abilities a plus
