Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the Transportation Specialist, to ensure the safe transportation of students, staff, and others to and from school, residential neighborhoods, and field trips.
JOB GOAL: To provide services to students and educational professionals in the educational process as bus driver for district transportation of special needs students.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must possess proficient reading skills
  • Must be willing to adapt to changing responsibilities & hours
  • Must hold a valid school bus endorsed CDL
  • Ability to relate to students, parents, and staff members on a daily basis and in a pleasant and effective manner
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff members
  • Ability to drive a bus in a manner assuring a safe and comfortable environment before and during travel
  • Ability to work flexible hours within the time-frame of the school day in addition to the times spent in transit to or from school
  • Ability to manipulate and secure students in seating devices and provide general assistance to bus students
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds and team lift 80 pounds
  • Transport children with special needs to and from their schools or school related programs/services
  • Monitor/supervise and communicate with bus students
  • Work cooperatively with bus paraprofessional. Driver is generally designated as team leader on the bus

  • Safely drives a school bus on days when school is in session over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, loading and unloading students at designated locations.
  • Transports students, teachers and others on school field or activity trips.
  • Inspects assigned bus on a daily basis prior to transporting of passengers to ensure that bus is in good, clean and safe working order.
  • Cleans and refuels bus as needed.
  • Ensures that a communication device is in proper working order before each trip.
  • Reports all mechanical deficiencies, traffic violations, or accidents, promptly.
  • Arranges for and ensures completion of routine maintenance of bus (e.g., oil change); transporting the bus to and from maintenance and/or repair facilities.
  • Maintains order and discipline in an effective and courteous manner among students being transported in accordance with district policies and procedures; reports any incidents involving student discipline.
  • Observes and tracks route timing, such as total time en-route, time between stops, loading and unloading times or any other requested information for the purpose of establishing route efficiency, as requested.
  • Maintains and submits records and reports as required.
  • Follows procedures to ensure that no child is left alone on bus without adult supervision at any time, and that all children have departed bus at the end of all bus routes (morning, evening and during field trips or other special trips).
  • Inventories bus emergency and first aid supplies and equipment; reports needs to the Transportation Specialist.
  • Prepares aides and children for bus drills and ensures bus evacuation drills are held as required.
  • In case of accidents/emergencies, evacuates children according to written and practiced procedures, ensures that medical emergency procedures are followed; completes a written report as required.
  • Attends and participates in trainings, and other continuing education, career and professional development opportunities.

  • Successful prior experience working as a bus driver, preferably in a school district or transporting children.

NOTE: A minimum of a high school diploma or GED is required for all employees of the Seaford School District.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Interested and qualified candidates should complete an online application.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: All new state employees will be required to participate in the State of Delaware's Direct Deposit system. With direct deposit, wage and salary payments are deposited in the employee's bank account via electronic funds transfer.
All final candidates for employment must have a satisfactory criminal background check before being placed on contract/payroll as per State of Delaware regulations. Candidates must call the Delaware State Police at (800) 464-4357 to make an appointment. The cost of the criminal background check is $65 (expense borne by the prospective employee). Final candidates must also receive a satisfactory child protection registry check.
Final candidates must also produce documentation of Mantoux skin test results for entrance to school system.
The State of Delaware has initiated a lag pay policy which means that new employees will receive the first paycheck at the end of the second pay period of work.
