Job description

Minimum Qualifications:ย 

  1. Valid Illinois licensed bus driverย 

  2. Mechanical expertiseย 

  3. A satisfactory driving record as revealed through checks with the National Driver Register Service and the Secretary of State's Driver Services Section, a satisfactory work history and a record free of criminal convictionsย 

  4. Must be able to do basic physical and visual activitiesย 

  5. Be able to drive a school bus when needed.

Reports to: Transportation Director Contract year: 12 monthsย 

Salary: Subject to non-certified salary scheduleย 

The basic functions of this position:ย 

  1. Maintain the fleet of all district owned vehiclesย 

  2. Follow guidelines established by the Illinois School Bus Driver Training Curriculum and the State of Illinois licensing requirementsย 

  3. Perform all duties assigned by the Transportation Directorย 

Major Responsibilities:ย 

  1. Vehicle Maintenanceย 

  2. Shop Maintenanceย 

  3. Record Keepingย 

  4. Miscellaneousย 

Major Responsibility No. 1: Vehicle Maintenanceย 

Key Duties:ย 

  1. Service all vehicles according to service schedule, keeping them in efficient working condition. (Grease, oil, and filter change)ย 

  2. Repair mechanical breakdownsย 

  3. Regularly inspect exhaust, fuel, and cooling systems, carrier bearings, U-joints, etc. and make necessary repairs as directedย 

  4. Check all tires, batteries, etc., prior to resuming service after vacation periodsย 

  5. Report inventory of oil, filters, and most needed spare parts, etc. to Transportation Directorย 

  6. Perform regular cleaning of the school-owned vehiclesย 

  7. Perform inspection and any needed repairs of the brake system on the school buses as required on the IDOT inspection report as directedย 

Major Responsibility No. 2: Shop Maintenanceย 

Key Duties:ย 

  1. Maintain shop equipmentย 

  2. Store supplies and parts in an orderly systemย 

  3. Clean the bus garage, as time permitsย 

  4. Be responsible for the security of the garage and equipmentย 

    Major Responsibility No. 3: Record Keepingย 

    Key Duties:ย 

  5. Maintain accurate records of bus service for state and federal transportation reportsย 

  6. Submit accurate records of vehicle and service expenses to Transportation Directorย 

  7. Submit records needed to pay bills and complete state and/or federal reports to Transportation Director as requestedย 

    Major Responsibility No. 4: Miscellaneousย 

    Key Duties:ย 

  8. Transport vehicles to state inspections, as directedย 

  9. Transport vehicles for warranty work during the warranty period as scheduledย 

  10. Respond to phone and radio-to-garage messagesย 

  11. Pick-up and deliver materials/supplies within and outside of district boundaries as requestedย 

  12. Complete other duties as assigned by Transportation Directorย
