Building Manager information

What Is a Building Manager?

A building manager is in charge of the property management for a building. You often work in schools, hospitals, retail buildings, or apartment complexes. It is your job to ensure the safety and security of the building and its occupants. Your main duties involve maintaining building cleanliness, overseeing security and emergency systems, and scheduling maintenance and repairs. You manage other employees by assigning them daily tasks and overseeing their work. Your exact duties as a building manager vary depending upon the building at which you are employed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Building Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Building Manager, you need strong knowledge of facility operations, maintenance procedures, and regulatory compliance, often supported by a background in property management or a related field. Familiarity with building management systems (BMS), maintenance scheduling software, and relevant safety certifications like OSHA are typically required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills help manage tenant relationships and coordinate with contractors effectively. These skills ensure safe, efficient building operations and high tenant satisfaction, which are critical for the property's success.

What are some typical challenges a Building Manager faces in coordinating maintenance and repairs?

Building Managers often encounter challenges in balancing urgent repair requests with routine maintenance schedules, particularly in larger or older properties. Coordinating with multiple vendors, ensuring minimal disruption to tenants, and staying within budget constraints can be demanding. Effective communication with occupants and maintenance teams, as well as proactive planning, are key to managing these responsibilities smoothly. Staying organized and anticipating issues before they escalate helps ensure building operations run efficiently.

What are building managers and what do they do?

Building managers are responsible for overseeing the daily operations, maintenance, and safety of residential, commercial, or industrial buildings. Their duties typically include coordinating repairs, managing tenant requests, supervising staff, conducting inspections, and ensuring compliance with safety and building regulations. Building managers play a vital role in keeping properties functional, safe, and well-maintained for occupants and visitors.

About the Role

We're looking for an Engineering Manager to lead teams building and deploying AI-powered, production-grade software systems directly into customer environments.

In this role, you'll operate at the intersection of technical leadership and client engagement. You'll be responsible for guiding engineers through ambiguous problem spaces, ensuring high-quality execution, and maintaining strong alignment between business objectives and technical solutions.

This position is ideal for leaders who enjoy being hands-on when needed, working closely with clients, mentoring engineers, and owning the successful delivery of complex, real-world systems.

What You'll Do

  • Lead and support teams of software and data engineers delivering AI-enabled systems in production
  • Own the technical execution and delivery of client-facing projects, ensuring quality, reliability, and outcomes
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business needs into production-ready systems
  • Guide system and solution design across infrastructure, backend services, data platforms, and AI workflows
  • Provide technical mentorship and coaching to engineers through problem solving sessions, code reviews, design discussions, and regular feedback
  • Balance short-term delivery needs with long-term system maintainability and scalability
  • Stay current with emerging AI and software technologies and apply them pragmatically to client solutions

 What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications

  • 6+ years of full-stack software engineering experience
  • 1-3 years of experience leading or managing technical teams
  • Demonstrated ability to set technical direction for client-facing initiatives, balancing delivery commitments, stakeholder expectations, and technical quality
  • Proven ability to lead client projects, build strong relationships, and deliver on-time results aligned with client goals.
  • Experience designing, building and maintaining production-grade systems in cloud environments (e.g., AWS, Azure, etc.)
  • Expertise in software engineering best practices, system design, and agile delivery methodologies
  • Experience with version control systems (e.g., GitHub) and CI/CD processes
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building or deploying AI-enabled systems, including LLM-based workflows (e.g., RAG, agentic systems, fine-tuning)
  • Experience with data-intensive systems, including ETL/ELT pipelines and analytical platforms
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform)
  • Experience with workflow orchestration (e.g., Airflow, AWS Step Functions)
  • Strong experience with SQL and relational or analytical data systems
  • Associate-level cloud architect certification (e.g., Azure Solutions Architect Associate, AWS Solutions Architect Associate, or equivalent)
