What are Build and Release engineers?

Build and Release engineers are IT professionals responsible for managing the process of compiling source code, building software products, and deploying releases to various environments. They automate build processes, maintain version control systems, resolve build issues, and ensure that software releases are reliable and consistent. Their work is crucial for streamlining development workflows, minimizing errors, and enabling continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) practices in software development teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Build and Release Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Build and Release Engineer, you need expertise in software development, version control, and automation tools, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with tools like Jenkins, Git, Maven, Docker, and CI/CD pipelines, along with certifications such as AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, is typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective collaboration skills help ensure smooth integration and deployment processes. These skills are crucial for maintaining reliable, efficient software delivery and minimizing downtime or deployment errors.

What are some common challenges faced by Build and Release Engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Build and Release Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating code from multiple developers, managing dependencies across various environments, and ensuring smooth, automated deployment pipelines. These issues can be addressed by implementing robust version control practices, using continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) tools, and fostering clear communication with development and operations teams. Regularly updating documentation and proactively monitoring builds also help minimize disruptions and maintain a reliable release process.

JOB SUMMARY

Vertafore is seeking a Senior Manager, Platform Build and Release who is responsible for defining and evolving the company’s build, CI/CD, and release management platforms and standards. This role ensures that engineering teams can deliver software reliably, securely, and at high velocity through well-designed pipelines, consistent tooling, and clear operational guardrails. This role works closely with application development teams, site reliability engineering, security, and operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in defining, establishing and maintaining the enterprise strategy and reference implementations for build systems, CI/CD tooling, and pipeline architectures.

  • Ensure build and pipeline solutions are scalable, resilient, and maintainable across multiple teams and products.

  • Drive consolidation and simplification of build and pipeline tooling where appropriate.

  • Own CI/CD standards, policies, and best practices, including:

  • Pipeline structure and conventions

  • Artifact versioning and promotion strategies

  • Security scanning and compliance integration

  • Partner with Security and Architecture to embed secure-by-default and compliance-ready practices.

  • Define guardrails that balance autonomy and consistency for delivery teams.

  • Define standards for:

  • Release orchestration and promotion across environments

  • Change management and deployment approvals

  • Rollback, rollback automation, and release observability

  • Lead the transition toward modern release models (e.g., continuous delivery, progressive delivery) as appropriate for the business.

  • Enable product and platform teams through:

  • Reusable tooling, templates, and documentation

  • Clear onboarding paths for build and release standards

  • Consultation and architectural guidance

  • Act as a trusted advisor to engineering leaders on delivery and release challenges.

  • Drive adoption through influence, clarity, and measurable value, not mandate alone.

  • Communicate strategy, progress, and outcomes to senior technology leadership.
