Job description

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Under the general supervision of the Program Director or designee, Community Harm Reduction Specialists will work on a field-based outreach team based in Midtown. Community Harm Reduction Specialists will work as a team in the community meeting with homeless individuals who are utilizing substances and would benefit from engagement and services. Community Harm Reduction Specialist will use an open and non-judgmental approach to help clients assist in the development of community support systems and networks, teach harm reduction skills such as Narcan training as well as provide Fentanyl test scrips to individuals dealing with opiate use disorder, and discuss other appropriate harm reduction techniques as appropriate. This position will assist individuals in the community with managing safe use habits, building rapport with clients, and connecting individuals to other providers/services at client request who can assist with client’s goals related to housing, health, SUD treatment, and mental health treatment. Participates in the provision of crisis intervention services within the community. Participates in community events to share harm reduction information. Completes appropriate documentation including tracking sheets, progress notes, and reports.
Participates in team building and staff meetings with the staff at the Chemical Dependency Crisis Center (CCDC) and other duties as assigned.

HOURS: 

Full-time 37.5 Hours per week

  • Monday-Friday 11:00am-7:30pm

QUALIFICATIONS:

CRPA (Certified recovery peer advocate) and knowledge of harm reduction. Will consider 2 years’ experience in a harm reduction setting (naloxone champion, needle exchange program, harm reduction drop in centers, etc…)in lieu of CRPA. Basic computer skills. Impeccable boundaries. Willingness to be trained in first aid, CPR and train the trainer for NARCAN.

*Vaccination preferred but not required.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

BRC's Chemical Dependency Crisis Center (CDCC) offers 32 beds of supportive inpatient detoxification services for homeless men and women. These services are licensed by NYS Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services and funded by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. The CDCC program provides medical services, individual and group motivational counseling, didactic health and substance abuse education, and therapeutic activities. In December 2014, CDCC added medically supervised withdrawal services its existing medically monitored withdrawal services, allowing the program to serve clients with a broader range of medical needs.
