Supports the research staff and ongoing studies involving biospecimen collections across the lifespan and in study populations. Utilizes knowledge of pre-analytic information/techniques to successfully perform specimen collections including but not limited to capillary and venous blood collections, as well as saliva, hair and urine collections. Evaluates specimen integrity, update study records according to collection procedures, and perform in-house processing and cryopreservation of specimens.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:- Demonstrates advanced technical skill in the collection of blood samples and acts as a resource to research staff.
- Evaluates and accurately process samples upon receipt.
- Operates testing instrumentation and performs testing kits, evaluating results and reporting resorts according to established policies and procedures.
- Communicates with study team members and other appropriate staff concerning procedures and results.
- Performs and records necessary quality control procedures.
- Stocks supplies, fills supply orders for research laboratories and communicates supply needs to supervisor or designee.
- Adherences to all policies and procedures relating to blood, hair and body fluid (e.g., saliva, urine), collection, processing, testing and storage.
- Acts as a departmental liaison to research and hospital staff providing information related to specimen requirements, test results, and assisting with troubleshooting guidance and/or refers problems within departmental guidelines.
- Attends required staff meetings and mandatory in-services.
- Demonstrates initiative, accountability and efficient use of time and materials including knowledge and self-direction.
- Performs clerical functions to include, but not limited to, completion of requisitions for reference lab testing at the hospital clinic, maintaining research databases, and filing completed test records and other regulatory documents.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:- Ability to adhere to policies and procedures as they relate to communication and collection of biospecimens, blood and body fluid samples.
- Ability to adhere to all hospital and research laboratory policies and procedures, to include those initiated to prevent the exposure of patient, self, other employees to blood borne pathogens and safety hazards.
- Ability to evaluate each situation and handle it with the utmost professionalism, dedication and concern for the health and welfare of others demonstrating a high level of customer service skills.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Training in phlebotomy required.
- If employed in the Cognitive Neuroscience department, Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 90 days of transfer or hire required.
- Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative(CITI) certification within 30 days of transfer or hire required.
PREFERED QUALIFICAITONS: - Experience with pediatric phlebotomy and biospecimen collection preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, EQUIPMENT USAGE, WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Position requires excellent physical stamina, which includes the ability to walk or stand from six to ten hours a day, do repetitive bending/reaching, climbing of stairs, sitting, and at times retrieving samples from long distances throughout the campus. Ability to carry ten pounds constantly and to lift up to fifty pounds on occasion. Position requires constant repetitive motion, using hands, fingers, wrists to perform testing, venipuncture, capillary and other biospecimen collections. May work at computer for varying periods of the day. Requires emotional stamina to handle the unexpected and stressful situations that may arise while working with participants undergoing specimen collections. Must be able to hear and speak well enough to communicate instructions by spoken conversation and phone. Must be able to see well enough to read labels, reports and computer screens. Ability to perform all work duties and/or move around in areas of restricted space.
