Job description

General Summary:
Under the direction of the Bookstore Manager, the Bookstore Cashier supports both in-store and online bookstore operations. This position is responsible for providing excellent customer service, operating the point-of-sale system, managing online sales and digital content, processing orders, maintaining inventory, and ensuring a clean and organized retail environment.
The Bookstore Assistant plays a key role in supporting the College's mission by delivering accessible, efficient, and culturally responsive retail services to students, faculty, staff, and the Muscogee (Creek) Nation community. This position requires flexibility, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
The provisions of the following Bookstore Cashier duties include, but are not limited to:
  1. Greet customers professionally and assist with purchases, product inquiries, and customer concerns.
  2. Operate the point-of-sales (POS) system and accurately process all forms of payment.
  3. Reconcile cash drawers and maintain accountability for daily transactions and reports.
  4. Answer phones and respond to customers and online order inquiries with proper etiquette.
  5. Assist with opening and closing procedures, including assuming leadership responsibilities in the absence of the Bookstore Manager.
  6. Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming bookstore, stockroom, and sales floor environment.
  7. Maintain and update the bookstore e-commerce website, including product listings, pricing, inventory, promotions, and digital content.
  8. Create product descriptions, photograph merchandise, and prepare digital assets for online listings.
  9. Apply basic SEO practices and monitor website performance to improve visibility, accessibility, user experience, and sales growth.
  10. Process online orders, coordinate fulfillment activities, and handle returns, exchanges, refunds, shipping records, and tracking information.
  11. Assist with receiving, unpacking, pricing, stocking, merchandising displays, inventory management, textbook distribution, and buyback events.
  12. Maintain accurate inventory records and ensure synchronization between in-store and online systems.
  13. Train and assist new staff and student workers as needed.
  14. Work collaboratively with bookstore staff and communicate operational needs, inventory concerns, and customer feedback to management.
  15. Participate in staff meetings, college committees, and special events.
  16. Follow all college policies, safety procedures, dress code standards, and maintain professionalism in a fast-paced environment.
  17. Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications:
Minimum Requirements -High School diploma or GED. 1-2 years of experience in bookstore, retail or any combination of education and experience which is substantially equivalent to the above qualifications. Good organizational skills and ability to work well with the public is essential. Communicate orally and in writing as required for reports and to exchange information, read and understand basic written materials, basic math and computer skills. Must be able to work weekends and/or evenings.
2. Preferred Requirements -Associate degree or coursework in business, marketing, communications or related field. Knowledge of tribal college student services issues. Excellent oral communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
3. Special Considerations - Ability to speak the Muscogee (Creek) language is preferable but not a requirement. Native American and veteran preference.
4. Special Requirements- Must be able to bend, lift, and stoop. Lift above shoulders and/or carry 50 pounds; may perform shift work.
Physical Requirements:
  1. May be required to lift and carry up to 40 pounds.

  9. Schedule: May occasionally require evening or weekend hours.

Licensure (if appropriate): Teaching certification is helpful but not mandatory.
