To thrive as a Bookkeeper, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, attention to detail, and typically a relevant qualification such as an associate’s degree or bookkeeping certification. Familiarity with accounting software like QuickBooks, Xero, or Sage, as well as proficiency in spreadsheets, is essential. Strong organizational skills, integrity, and clear communication help bookkeepers excel in managing financial records and interacting with clients or team members. These skills ensure accurate financial data management, compliance, and effective support for business decision-making.

What is bookkeeping hiring?

Bookkeeping hiring refers to the process of recruiting and selecting qualified individuals or agencies to manage a company's financial records. This includes tasks such as recording transactions, reconciling accounts, and preparing financial statements. Employers may hire bookkeepers as full-time employees, part-time staff, or independent contractors, depending on their business needs. The goal is to ensure accurate, up-to-date financial information that supports business decision-making and compliance with regulations.

Which type of bookkeeping job pays the most?

Senior bookkeeping roles, such as accounting managers or financial controllers, typically offer the highest salaries in bookkeeping, especially when combined with certifications like CPA or CMA. Specialized bookkeeping positions in industries like finance or healthcare also tend to pay more due to complexity and responsibility levels.

Both roles require similar credentials and are found in similar environments, making them closely related but distinct in scope.

What are some common challenges faced by bookkeepers during the hiring process, and how can they be overcome?

Bookkeepers involved in the hiring process often encounter challenges such as assessing candidates' proficiency with specific accounting software, ensuring attention to detail, and verifying practical experience. To overcome these, it is helpful to include skills assessments or practical tests as part of the interview process, and to ask scenario-based questions that reflect real bookkeeping tasks. Collaborating closely with HR and accounting managers can also ensure alignment on required competencies and cultural fit, leading to more effective hiring decisions.

Is AI replacing bookkeepers?

AI is automating certain bookkeeping tasks such as data entry, reconciliation, and report generation, which can increase efficiency. However, bookkeepers are still needed for complex financial analysis, decision-making, and ensuring accuracy, making the role evolving rather than entirely replaced.

Job description

At System Six, we're trying to build one of the best places to work in cloud-accounting - a place where our team members are the most important part of our business and where they consistently experience joy, flexibility and rewarding compensation. We are a fast growing, modern, 100% remote organization delivering bookkeeping, payroll, bill-pay, invoicing and sales tax filing services to hundreds of customers nationwide.
We are actively seeking our next Cloud Bookkeeper, a joyful and driven team member responsible for day-to-day bookkeeping and finance tasks for our clients.
This position is available for US-based individuals seeking full-time work, allowing you to balance other important parts of your life with an exciting, fulfilling career. Our talented team loves System Six and we can't wait to show you how that energy permeates throughout our organization.
So what are we looking for in an ideal candidate?
Minimum of 3 years of full-charge bookkeeping experience in a multi-client environment. College degree preferred.
  • Experience with: day-to-day transactional coding, reconciling, AP processing, AR, payroll processing, month-end close, journal entries, financial reporting
  • 2+ years in QBO, Bill.com or Ramp, Gusto or other payroll software, and other cloud accounting technologies (Karbon and Double are a great plus)
  • Ability to manage deadlines across multiple clients with an awareness of what needs to be prioritized
  • Excellent communication skills with both clients and team members across digital channels and an innate desire to build relationships
  • Humility and openness to coaching and constructive feedback; always seeking to improve
  • Keen attention to detail and obsession with making sure there is accuracy, integrity, and dependability in their work
  • Joy and a positive attitude in all communications internally and externally

What does the day to day look like for this role?
  • Working with more senior staff, you'll handle much of the day-to-day operations for our clients (transaction entry, invoicing, bill payments, payroll preparation, journal entries, reconciliations, etc.)
  • Your daily tasks will be cleanly organized in Karbon, our practice management system, a critical tool that will set you up for success managing work across multiple clients
  • While you won't be responsible for managing client relationships, you'll interact with clients from time to time, answering specific questions or politely seeking certain information
  • As you work, you'll always stop to ask questions of your team when you aren't exactly sure what needs to be done - whether inside a client's books or another client system

Importantly, here's what's in it for you:
  • A joyful work environment where employees and culture are paramount. We understand that we are all humans and we want your success in your professional life to enhance your personal life
  • A 100% remote environment. We've been remote for 10+ years and are set up for you to succeed remotely while working with flexibility during daytime professional hours
  • Strong compensation. This position offers a salary range of $50,000-$60,000 and includes a quarterly bonus structure based upon a percentage of client profit generated by the client you work on that ranges from $500-$1,500 annually.
  • Competitive benefits. We provide health, vision and dental insurance, 401k matching, PTO, family leave, annual in-person gatherings and many other leading benefits
  • Growth opportunities. We are a fast growing company on a multi-decade journey of evolution. We relish promoting from within, and will support you in your efforts to grow with System Six

At System Six, we truly believe in the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance and we understand the importance of family and personal commitments. While we encourage our employees to prioritize their well-being outside of work, we do not allow team members to take on additional paid accounting tasks beyond their role with us. This is a 100% remote, work from home role. You must have strong, reliable home internet connection and an environment conducive to video and phone calls. Our accounting positions operate on a W2 basis and we track our time by client and type of work. Availability is required five days a week within standard professional hours. Like most accounting roles, it's common for weekly hours to fluctuate slightly (+/- 3-5 hours) due to varying client demands from week to week.
This position at System Six does not qualify for the CPA experience requirement involving the substantial use of skills that are relevant to CPA licensing.
System Six is an equal opportunity employer that is committed to diversity and inclusion in the workplace. We encourage all backgrounds to apply, and prohibit discrimination of any kind based on any and all protected classes.
