How much do bookkeeping hiring jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 10, 2026, the average hourly pay for bookkeeping hiring in the United States is $24.31, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $19.71 and $27.64 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Bookkeeper, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Bookkeeper, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, attention to detail, and typically a relevant qualification such as an associate’s degree or bookkeeping certification. Familiarity with accounting software like QuickBooks, Xero, or Sage, as well as proficiency in spreadsheets, is essential. Strong organizational skills, integrity, and clear communication help bookkeepers excel in managing financial records and interacting with clients or team members. These skills ensure accurate financial data management, compliance, and effective support for business decision-making.

What is bookkeeping hiring?

Bookkeeping hiring refers to the process of recruiting and selecting qualified individuals or agencies to manage a company's financial records. This includes tasks such as recording transactions, reconciling accounts, and preparing financial statements. Employers may hire bookkeepers as full-time employees, part-time staff, or independent contractors, depending on their business needs. The goal is to ensure accurate, up-to-date financial information that supports business decision-making and compliance with regulations.

What is the difference between Bookkeeping Hiring vs Accounting Clerk?

AspectBookkeeping HiringAccounting Clerk
CredentialsHigh school diploma or equivalent; some roles may require bookkeeping certificationHigh school diploma; some roles may prefer accounting coursework
Work EnvironmentSmall to medium businesses, accounting firms, or finance departmentsCorporate offices, accounting departments, or administrative settings
Job FocusRecording financial transactions, maintaining ledgers, data entrySupporting accounting functions, data entry, assisting with financial reports

Bookkeeping Hiring and Accounting Clerk roles often overlap, but bookkeeping hiring focuses more on recording and maintaining financial records, while accounting clerks may handle broader accounting support tasks. Both roles require similar credentials and are found in similar environments, making them closely related but distinct in scope.

What are some common challenges faced by bookkeepers during the hiring process, and how can they be overcome?

Bookkeepers involved in the hiring process often encounter challenges such as assessing candidates' proficiency with specific accounting software, ensuring attention to detail, and verifying practical experience. To overcome these, it is helpful to include skills assessments or practical tests as part of the interview process, and to ask scenario-based questions that reflect real bookkeeping tasks. Collaborating closely with HR and accounting managers can also ensure alignment on required competencies and cultural fit, leading to more effective hiring decisions.

Is AI replacing bookkeepers?

AI is automating certain bookkeeping tasks such as data entry, reconciliation, and report generation, but it does not fully replace bookkeepers. Human oversight remains essential for complex financial analysis, decision-making, and ensuring accuracy, making bookkeeping roles continue to evolve rather than disappear.

About Heard

Heard is an all-in-one financial solution for therapists and mental health providers that combines software and human support to handle bookkeeping, taxes, payroll, and more. Our mission is to help providers be providers - acting as their financial back office so they can spend less time running their business and more time helping their clients.

About the Role

The Bookkeeping Lead will be responsible for driving operational excellence, quality, and scalability across Heard's bookkeeping function.

They ensure accurate, timely, and compliant financial outcomes while maintaining strong quality standards.

This role combines people leadership and systems leadership. Beyond managing output, the Bookkeeping Lead will strengthen processes, improve bookkeeping quality, and partner cross-functionally with Product, Support, and Tax to scale the function through increased automation and workflow optimization.

  • Manage performance targets across quality, productivity, SLAs, and automation adoption
  • Optimize core workflows (month-end, payroll, onboarding, year-end) to improve efficiency and accuracy
  • Use data and reporting to identify trends, resolve bottlenecks, and elevate team performance
  • Manage BPO partner relationships to ensure consistent, high-quality service delivery
  • Partner cross-functionally with Tax, Support, and Product to resolve complex issues and improve the customer experience
  • Increase automation adoption to reduce manual work and enable scalable growth
  • Maintain strong internal controls to protect accuracy, compliance, and customer trust
You may be a fit if
  • You have 5+ years in bookkeeping or accounting operations
  • You have 2+ years leading or mentoring team members
  • You possess a strong understanding of S-Corp and Sole-proprietor bookkeeping
  • You have experience working in a high-volume, tech-enabled services environment
  • You are data-driven; comfortable using dashboards and performance metrics
  • You poses strong process design and documentation skills
  • You are familiar with automation tools and workflow optimization
  • You have excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills are a must

What you'll get in return

  • Opportunity to reshape how financial services work for mental health providers
  • A fast-moving environment where your work has direct, visible impact on the business
$75,000 - $90,000 a year
