How much do contracted bookkeeper jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 25, 2026, the average hourly pay for contracted bookkeeper in the United States is $24.31, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $19.71 and $27.64 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How much should you pay a bookkeeper per hour?

Contracted bookkeepers typically earn between $20 and $50 per hour, depending on experience, location, and the complexity of the work. Certified or highly experienced bookkeepers may charge higher rates, especially for specialized services or small business environments.

What are contracted bookkeepers?

Contracted bookkeepers are professionals hired on a temporary or part-time basis, rather than as full-time employees, to manage a company's financial records. Their duties typically include recording financial transactions, reconciling accounts, producing financial statements, and ensuring accuracy in the company's bookkeeping. Businesses often hire contracted bookkeepers to save on employment costs or to fill short-term needs, such as during tax season or financial audits. They may work independently or through an accounting firm, and often serve multiple clients at once.

What job makes 10,000 a month without a degree?

A contracted bookkeeper can earn around $10,000 per month by managing financial records for multiple clients, often working independently or through freelance platforms. Success in this role depends on experience, skills with accounting software, and building a strong client base, with some professionals reaching high income levels without formal degrees.

Is AI replacing bookkeepers?

AI technology is automating certain bookkeeping tasks such as data entry, reconciliation, and report generation, which can increase efficiency. However, contracted bookkeepers still play a vital role in interpreting financial data, providing advice, and handling complex or unique transactions that require human judgment. The use of AI complements rather than fully replaces the skills of a professional bookkeeper.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contracted Bookkeeper, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contracted Bookkeeper, you need a strong grasp of accounting principles, attention to detail, and experience with bookkeeping tasks, often supported by an associate's degree or relevant certification. Familiarity with accounting software such as QuickBooks, Xero, or Sage, and sometimes certification in these platforms, is typically required. Strong organizational skills, integrity, and clear communication help build client trust and ensure accuracy in financial reporting. These skills are crucial for maintaining precise records, supporting business decision-making, and meeting compliance requirements.

What is the difference between Contracted Bookkeeper vs Part-Time Bookkeeper?

AspectContracted BookkeeperPart-Time Bookkeeper
CredentialsTypically requires bookkeeping certifications or experienceOften requires similar credentials, but may vary by employer
Work EnvironmentUsually works remotely or on-site for multiple clientsWorks on-site or remotely for a single employer or client
Employer UsageHired on a contractual basis for specific projects or periodsEmployed part-time, with set hours per week
Search IntentLooking for flexible, project-based bookkeeping servicesSeeking ongoing, reduced-hour bookkeeping support

The main difference is that a Contracted Bookkeeper is hired for specific projects or periods, often working with multiple clients, while a Part-Time Bookkeeper works fewer hours for a single employer or client on an ongoing basis. Both roles typically require similar credentials but differ in work arrangement and employment structure.

How to find contract bookkeeping work?

Contract bookkeepers can find work through online freelance platforms, job boards, and networking with small businesses or accounting firms. Building a strong profile, showcasing relevant skills like QuickBooks or Excel, and obtaining certifications can improve job prospects. Many contract opportunities are project-based and require self-management and flexibility.

What are some common challenges contracted bookkeepers face when working with multiple clients, and how can they manage these effectively?

Contracted bookkeepers often juggle the needs of several clients simultaneously, which can lead to challenges such as managing varying deadlines, adapting to different accounting systems, and maintaining clear communication. To address these, many bookkeepers use robust project management tools, set clear expectations with each client regarding deliverables, and establish efficient workflows for regular reporting. Staying organized and proactive with communication helps ensure smooth collaboration and high-quality service, even when handling diverse client requirements.
