How much do bookkeepers jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 20, 2026, the average hourly pay for bookkeepers in the United States is $24.31, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $19.71 and $27.64 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges bookkeepers face when managing multiple clients or accounts?

Bookkeepers often juggle several clients or accounts at once, which can make time management and organization challenging. Ensuring accuracy across different sets of financial records, keeping up with varying client requirements, and meeting strict deadlines during tax season or end-of-month closings can add additional pressure. Many bookkeepers address these challenges by using specialized accounting software, maintaining clear communication with clients, and implementing consistent processes for documentation and reconciliation. Collaboration with accountants or finance teams is also common, especially for complex transactions or compliance questions.

Is AI replacing bookkeepers?

AI technology is automating certain tasks in bookkeeping, such as data entry and transaction categorization, but it does not fully replace bookkeepers. Bookkeepers still play a vital role in overseeing financial records, ensuring accuracy, and interpreting data, often using accounting software and requiring professional certifications. Human judgment remains essential for complex financial analysis and compliance.

What are the 4 types of bookkeeping?

Bookkeepers typically perform four main types of bookkeeping: single-entry, which records transactions once; double-entry, which records each transaction twice for accuracy; manual bookkeeping, done by hand; and computerized bookkeeping, using accounting software. Each type varies in complexity and is suited to different business sizes and needs.

What are bookkeepers?

Bookkeepers are professionals responsible for recording and maintaining a business’s financial transactions, such as purchases, sales, receipts, and payments. They ensure that all financial data is accurate and up-to-date, which is essential for businesses to monitor their financial health and prepare for tax season. Bookkeepers typically use specialized accounting software to manage accounts and may also help with payroll, invoicing, and reconciling bank statements.

What does a bookkeeper actually do?

A bookkeeper is responsible for recording and maintaining a company's financial transactions, including sales, purchases, receipts, and payments. They often use accounting software to ensure accurate financial records, which are essential for preparing reports and supporting financial decision-making.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Bookkeeper, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Bookkeeper, you need strong attention to detail, numerical accuracy, and foundational knowledge of accounting principles, often supported by an associate degree in accounting or bookkeeping certification. Familiarity with accounting software such as QuickBooks, Xero, or Sage is typically required. Excellent organizational skills, reliability, and clear communication help bookkeepers manage multiple tasks and interact effectively with clients or team members. These skills ensure accurate financial records, compliance with regulations, and smooth business operations.

Bookkeepers focus on recording daily financial transactions and maintaining accurate financial records, often with minimal formal credentials. While both roles are essential in managing business finances, bookkeepers are more involved in data entry and reconciliation, whereas accountants provide strategic financial insights.

How much should you pay a bookkeeper per hour?

The average hourly rate for bookkeepers ranges from $20 to $50, depending on experience, location, and the complexity of the work. Certified bookkeepers or those with specialized skills may charge higher rates, especially for small businesses or complex financial tasks.
