They ensure that a company's financial information is up-to-date and also help assess financial performance, spot trends, and forecast future outcomes. This dual role is important for small and medium-sized businesses that need both detailed financial tracking and strategic financial guidance but may not have separate positions for each function.

Can a bookkeeper become a financial analyst?

A bookkeeper can transition to a financial analyst role by gaining additional skills in financial modeling, data analysis, and accounting software, often through further education or certifications like the CFA or CPA. Experience with financial reporting and analysis is also valuable for this career shift.

Starting a career as a bookkeeper or financial analyst at age 40 is feasible, as many finance roles value experience, analytical skills, and certifications like the CPA or CFA. Career changers often bring valuable perspectives, and gaining relevant skills through courses or certifications can facilitate entry into the field at any age.

About Sanctuary Recovery Centers
Sanctuary Recovery Centers is a Phoenix-based behavioral health and substance use disorder treatment organization providing recovery-focused care across multiple levels of service, including residential, outpatient, and intensive outpatient programs. We are a mission-driven organization committed to ethical practice, operational excellence, and data-informed decision-making.
Position Overview
Sanctuary Recovery Centers is seeking a Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) Analyst to support financial planning, forecasting, and performance analysis across the organization. This role is responsible for translating financial and operational data into insights that help leadership understand performance, plan for growth, and allocate resources effectively.
The FP&A Analyst works closely with the Controller, operational leaders, and an experienced tax professional to support budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, tax planning considerations, and strategic initiatives. This is a forward-looking finance role focused on analysis, not accounting or bookkeeping.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Planning & Forecasting
  • Support the annual budgeting process and periodic re-forecasting
  • Develop and maintain financial models related to revenue, expenses, staffing, and program performance
  • Assist with long-range financial planning and scenario analysis

Reporting & Variance Analysis
  • Prepare monthly performance reports comparing actuals to budget and forecast
  • Analyze variances and identify key drivers impacting financial performance
  • Develop dashboards, summaries, and presentations for executive leadership

Business & Operational Partnership
  • Partner with department leaders to understand operational drivers and financial impact
  • Support headcount planning, program expansion analysis, and cost modeling
  • Translate complex financial data into clear, actionable insights for non-finance stakeholders

Data & Financial Analysis
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and financial trends
  • Perform ad-hoc financial analyses to support strategic and operational decisions
  • Ensure consistency and accuracy between FP&A reporting and accounting results

Process Improvement
  • Improve financial models, reports, and forecasting processes
  • Support automation, standardization, and documentation of FP&A workflows
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field
  • 3+ years of experience in FP&A, financial analysis, or strategic finance
  • Strong understanding of financial statements and cash flow drivers
  • Advanced Excel skills (financial modeling, formulas, pivot tables)
  • Experience in healthcare, behavioral health, or nonprofit environments
  • Ability to communicate financial insights clearly to non-financial leaders
  • Experience working in a lean or growing organization
  • CPA, CMA, FPAC, or progress toward a financial certification is a plus
What We Offer
  • Competitive salary based on experience
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • Collaborative, mission-driven environment
  • Opportunity to influence strategic decisions in behavioral health care
