Job description

Position Overview:
Lewis Bakeries is searching for an Assistant Plant Engineer to report directly to the Bakery Chief Engineer while being responsible for supervising all positions within the Maintenance Department and that will work collectively with the Chief Engineer to coordinate and discuss plans to maximize the bakery performance. The Assistant Plant Engineer will be in charge of assisting and coordinating the supporting bakery maintenance team to achieve a safe and efficient completion of the workload. The Assistant Plant Engineer is also accountable for execution of preventative maintenance schedules for process equipment and maintaining up-to-date Standard Operating Procedures. Lewis Bakeries operates on a 24-hour continuous schedule; the Assistant Plant Engineer must be available as needed. The Assistant Plant Engineer generally works the opposite shift of the Chief Engineer to maximize departmental leadership exposure.

Responsibilities:
  • Troubleshoot and repair Packaging, Conveyors, Ovens, Boilers, Refrigeration and related Bakery Machinery.
  • Supervise/Perform repairs to hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, PLC, bakery machinery and equipment.
  • Ability to set-up all general machines and supporting equipment as assigned. Equipment includes, but is not limited to, wrapping machines, natural gas fired furnaces, gas fryers, dough mixers, batching and scaling systems, boilers, freezers and Conveyor systems etc.
  • Supervise/Perform routine set-up and maintenance work as required.
  • Maintain Preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Validate that Preventative maintenance functions have been completed timely and correctly. Coach/train hourly mechanics on proper PM responsibilities.
  • Accountable for correctly reporting and recording data as required.
  • Do other job related routine tasks as required including training.
  • Supervise/Perform general facility maintenance tasks.
  • Assist in the on-the-job training assignments.
  • Work from Blue Prints and/or mechanical drawings.
  • Work safely and maintain sanitary work environment.
  • Communicate to the Chief Engineer/Plant Manager any down-time information.
  • Ensure all equipment is operational and OSHA compliant
  • Leads troubleshooting activities related to equipment failures, reliability, throughput, quality problems or environmental exceedances.
  • Coaches and counsels employees on job performance and teamwork
  • Reviews hourly employee work logs/sheets and verifies tasks performed

Requirements:
  • Minimum of 5 years work experience in a management position
  • Union management experience strongly desired
  • 2-5+ years experience troubleshooting and repairing machinery
  • Experience working safely with Hydraulics, Pneumatic's, Electrical, Conveyors, Refrigeration, Boilers and Electronics
