Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Blood Bank Technologist.
In this role, the successful candidate This position performs all routine and complicated laboratory procedures including specimen processing and handling, testing of patient specimens, calculating and reporting of results, performance of quality control procedures, operation and maintenance of instruments and equipment.
Job Responsibilities:
• Demonstrates knowledge of Blood Bank Quality Assurance Plan Self Assessment (BBQAPSA) including the ten BB organizational standards known as Quality System Essentials based on the current AABB standards.
• Performs and documents procedures required to ensure the quality of testing being performed. Responsibility includes quality control, instrument preventative maintenance, function checks and calibration. Devices included but not limited to are, platelet incubators, centrifuges, regular incubators, water baths, dri-baths, hematrons, sterile connection devices, plastic disposables, blood warmers, blood analyzers and blood irradiator. Must be able to identify and report issues.
• Able to resolve internal/external complaints. Effectively explains and interprets NYULH policies and BB SOPs. Displays effective listening skills and interpersonal communications.
• Inventory Management: Maintains adequate inventory of blood and blood components. Demonstrates competency in ordering blood products in BloodHub or from other suppliers. Accurately reconciles shipments, inspects blood and components for acceptance, accessions into HCLL, and performs confirmatory testing and stores in appropriate controlled temp devices. Voluntarily fills in down time with this activity. Runs inventory reports to review and record disposition of units and physically reconcile units. Removes and discards all expired products. Consistently follows SOP for blood and components selection while adhering to FIFO system where dictated by SOP. Notify MD office if directed donor product is unsuitable for recipient.
• Accurately reviews and accessions patient samples for testing and product orders. Performs pre-transfusion testing such as ABO/Rh, antibody screening, antibody identification, DAT, and crossmatch. Accurately interprets and enters test results into the computer. Performs all other immunohematology tests such as cord blood, antibody titers, fetomaternal hemorrhage screen and Hgb S testing of donor units as requested according to SOP. Performs Quality Control and /or process audit functions as scheduled and according to SOP.
• Component Modification: accurately performs blood irradiation, sterile docking of units, volume reduction of blood products, reconstitution of blood products and thawing of frozen products. Modifies components in computer and appropriately relabels product according to SOP. Blood Dispensing: issues all blood, blood components and HPCs carefully and with full attention to special patient needs for blood attributes and component modifications as indicated in orders, and according to SOP. (Failure to complete transactions in the HCLL system > 2 per year is a serious breach of patient safety).
• Demonstrates knowledge of Documents and Records - uses computer systems to conduct patient and donor testing and processing activities. Familiar with BBQAPSA policy and procedure manual. Recognizes and safeguards the control functions of HCLL and Epic systems designed to protect patient confidentiality and disclosure of PHI consistent with security access. Understands and adheres to requirements for record creation, maintenance, review, retention and storage and destruction as set forth by regulatory agencies. Familiar with computer down time procedures, documents, policies and forms. Provides accurate quality control records.
• Appropriately detects, evaluates and reports suspected complications experienced by transfusion recipients (Anaphylaxis, TRALI, AHTR, DHTR, Septic Shock, FNHTR, Anaphylactoid, Urticarial, Fluid Overload). Consistently completes Transfusion Reaction Investigation thoroughly and accurately, before submitting for supervisory and medical director review.
• Demonstrates knowledge and awareness of Blood Bank Deviation, Non-conformance and Adverse Events. Successfully intervenes to prevent product non-conformance and its possible consequences including fatal donor and recipient transfusion reactions. Understands requirements for FDA Biological Product Deviations and NYS DOH Errors Incidents and Accidents reports. Understands and carries out immediately all procedures regarding products that are nonconforming, especially as pertaining to inspection at receipt, selection, preparation, dispensing or shipping such as unacceptable temperature monitors, blood product labeling discrepancies, special instruction not met, etc. Reports non-conformances immediately to Supervisor or BB Medical Director.
• Support LOH BB - Is competent to perform all laboratory donor processes, inventory management, patient testing, blood dispensing, and information systems processes in all workstations. Understands focus on dispensing; adheres to issue policy; intercom system. Familiar with the LOH service variations on policies and procedures. Able to function in all seven workstations of the BB. Familiar with the shipping program for LOH, ACC, and CCC. Familiar with testing procedure of LOH; crossmatch and issue policy.
• Internal/External Assessments - Participates as directed in internal assessments by completing the blood transfusion monitoring - process improvement survey. Participates as directed in external assessments by AABB, CAP, FDA, TJC and NYS DOH. Participates as directed in corrective action plans; preventive action planning, and quality monitoring activities. Participated successfully in CAP proficiency testing.
• Demonstrates knowledge of Facilities and Safety in Blood Banking including biological, chemical, radiation safety, and waste management. Complies with hospital and departmental standards. Familiar with fire safety, biological safety or chemical policies.
• Enters Patient Safety Intelligence (PSI) as required.
• Participates in the training of new medical technologists/residents at the direction of seniors and lead technologists.
• Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a NYSDOH Licensed as a Certified Clinical Laboratory Technologist.
Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Technology from a program registered by the NYS Department of Education or Bachelor's Degree in the major of biology, chemistry or physical sciences from an accredited college or university.
One year experience in a clinical laboratory (completion of an internship at a qualified institution is acceptable).
NYS License.
1 year (completion of an internship at a qualified institution is acceptable)
Effective Interpersonal and Communication skills required.
Required Licenses: Clinical Lab Technologist-NYS
Preferred Qualifications:
Excellent computer knowledge/skill. Familiar with HCLL and Epic, work experience in a large volume hospital, MLS/MT ASCP, BB, or SBB certification credentials preferred.
