Job Summary
The Blood Bank Medical Technologist performs routine and complex patient/sample pre-analytical and post-analytical compatibility tests using automated and non-automated methods, proficiency tests, quality control, preventative maintenance per established policies and procedures,
Qualifications
Required:
Bachelors Degree in Medical Technology-Medical Laboratory Science Required,
Preferred:
Two to three years clinical lab experience,
ASCP or equivalent certification preferred
Recent graduates with Blood Bank training are welcome to apply

Essential Job Functions
  • Perform complex analytical testing on patient specimens with accuracy, precision, and efficiency under the direction of a pathologist,
  • Provides accurate and reliable analytical results necessary for the diagnosis and treatment of the patients,
  • Maintains inventory of supplies, reagents and blood products,
  • Maintains non-analytic equipment such as refrigerators, freezers, cell washers and centrifuges,
  • Responsible for performing and providing compatibility tests for patient blood transfusion needs as per the established standard operating procedure,
  • Effectively manage and utilize the blood and blood product inventory,
  • Assistance with the preparation and collection of quality control/assurance data reports & performance of quality audits as assigned,
  • Responsible for quality clinical laboratory testing is evidenced by: performing the correct test, on the right person, at the right time, producing accurate test results, with the best outcome, in the most cost-effective manner,
  • Exhibits effective patient and customer service skills with adherence to core values and mission of hospital,
  • Demonstrates a clear understanding and working knowledge of advanced Transfusion Service concepts as evidenced by an ability to interpret group types, antibody screening and panels,
  • Recognizes and evaluates results relative to the immune response expected for each age group,
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform all Transfusion Service procedures as outlined in the SOP manual when needed,
  • Demonstrates a strong familiarity with Transfusion Policies by being able to answer questions or troubleshoot policy problems and give assistance when needed to other staff members,
  • Documents all deviations on an event report when necessary,
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform tests correctly with no technical errors, as evidenced by correctly completing all available samples, including routine crossmatches, received no later than one hour prior to the end of the shift,
  • Prints BBLIS pending log for test completion,
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform tests correctly and with no more than 4 uncorrected minor clerical errors such as:
  • 1 Not entering appropriate result comments, eg,for DAT test and ABID,
  • 2 Not returning units in the BBLIS or returning units that are crossmatch/directed to available status,
  • 3 Not crossmatching directed/hold units to a patient with antibodies,
  • 4 Not entering results into the BBLIS,
  • 5 Recording wrong result - no clerical errors which would affect patient care,
  • Demonstrates the ability to resolve antibody ID problems by correctly identifying antibodies and finding, when needed, compatible blood for transfusion,
  • Demonstrates the ability to prepare components such as aliquoting Packed Red Cells, Thawing Fresh Frozen Plasma, Pooling Cryoprecipitate and preparing multiple units of Platelets or Single Donor Platelets, labels prepared components correctly,
  • Demonstrates the ability to irradiate and label blood and blood components correctly,(This will be evidenced by the preparation of labels without any errors, taking only the minimum amount of time so as not to delay patient care)
  • Demonstrates the ability to interpret the results of all Quality Control tests as evidenced by ty standards, ensuring accurate specimen handling, identification, and storage,
  • Collaborate effectively as a team member within the department, fostering positive communication, cooperation, and quality service delivery,
  • Train and mentor new staff or students as needed, promoting professionalism, lab excellence, continuous learning and adherence to best practices,
  • Participate in accreditation readiness, audits, and quality improvement initiatives to strengthen laboratory performance,
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned to support laboratory operations and patient care,
