ABOUT POMONA COLLEGE: Located near Los Angeles, California, Pomona College is widely regarded as one of the nation's premier liberal arts colleges. Established in 1887, Pomona College is known for small classes, a challenging curriculum, close relationships between students and faculty, and a range of student research and leadership opportunities. Pomona is a member of The Claremont Colleges.
JOB PURPOSE: Pomona College seeks a dynamic and thoughtful professional staff member who will contribute fully to the operations of the Admissions Office and the Communications Team. The Assistant Dean manages virtual communications and marketing projects for prospective & admitted undergraduate students, parents/families, counselors, and community-based organizations. This will include communicating the value of a liberal arts & sciences education to diverse audiences through social media, virtual programming, a student blog, and co-managing the interns associated with each. This individual handles all aspects of student recruitment traveling throughout the year to represent Pomona College at school visits, college fairs, and other admission related programs. The Assistant Dean also serves as an Admissions Officer with responsibilities that include giving information sessions, overseeing all aspects of a recruitment territory, reading applicant files and participating in the selection of the new class.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Reporting directly to the Associate Dean of Admissions & Transfer Coordinator, and under the guidance of the Director of Communications & Marketing, the Assistant Dean of Admissions will perform the following essential duties and responsibilities:
1. Serve on the Communications Team and support the Director of Communications & Marketing and Associate Dean with research, writing, developing content, and editing communications.
2. Work to deploy communications and marketing projects.
3. Manage development and execution of informational webinars, student-led virtual sessions, and potential large-scale virtual programs (1-2 per year).
4. Manage the Office of Admissions' social media accounts and campaigns.
5. Oversee content for Sagehen Stories (our student blog).
6. Co-manage the student intern program.
7. Perform recruiting and admission functions for a designated national and potentially international territory:
  • Travel to designated national territory to visit high schools, college fairs, community colleges, community-based organizations, and participate in group travel.
  • Contact, meet, recruit and work to enroll prospective high school and transfer students.
  • Send and respond to inquiries and correspondence about the admissions process in a timely manner.
  • Advise students seeking information about professional career paths through Pomona College's academic and social opportunities with a broad liberal arts education, including internships, study abroad, minors and double majors.
  • Assist students with the application process.
  • Read, evaluate and rate applicant admission materials to make appropriate referrals to the Admissions Selection Committee and to meet the College's annual enrollment goals.
  • Attend Office of Admission meetings.
  • Follow up with admitted students.
  • Serve as the College liaison to students, their parents and the communities in their assigned territory.
  • Serve as a liaison with high school counselors including scheduling appointments to meet them.

8. Collaborate with faculty, staff, and administrators within the Claremont Colleges Consortium.
9. Coordinate special projects/tasks and provide assistance as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, English, a liberal arts field, or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
Licenses/Certificates: A valid driver's license is required or equivalent means of reliable transportation to off-site meetings and events.
Experience: A minimum of 2 years of experience working with high school students or counselors, or in a communications related field is required. Experience at an academic institution is preferred..
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL SKILLS: This position must possess the knowledge, skills and abilities to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position or be able to demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using other skills and abilities not listed below.
1. Deploy professional skills in admissions, enrollment, selections processes, goal setting, in collaboration with colleagues to best promote the College's strategic interests and core values.
  • Represent the College with a professional demeanor.
  • Communicate effectively and compassionately while managing expectations of a highly invested customer base.
  • Lead systems that facilitate efficiency and timeliness in a high-volume, highly technical environment.

2. Demonstrate the highest levels of integrity and commitment to good decision making.
  • Design, manage and oversee processes that are ethical and align with the values of Pomona College.
  • Assist training and critical conversations for the staff around virtual programs.

3. Demonstrated effectiveness and clarity of verbal and written communication with excellent interpersonal communication skills to facilitate, motivate, mentor and inspire a diverse group of colleagues, student workers, and stakeholders from a wide variety of backgrounds. Must handle all activities and highly confidential information with patience, discretion, tact, and a keen eye for detail.
  • Provide exceptional customer service through timely and thoughtful responses to e-mails, phone calls, and other modes of communication.

4. Able to operate computers with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook) and associated professional software (such as Technosolution's Slate, Internet research, menu-driven databases).
  • Demonstrated understanding of the use of technology and artificial intelligence in aiding and improving systems and processes to achieve annual goals.

5. Must be familiar with social media platforms, social media management tools such as SproutSocial, and related editing tools such as Canva and CapCut.
6. Able to handle multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and work both independently and as a collaborative member of the admissions team in support of the College's strategic vision and the division's annual enrollment goals.
7. Must understand and communicate the mission and history of the College's liberal arts and sciences environment.
8. Must have exceptional organizational, time management and judgement skills to complete work with accuracy and attention to detail and to handle extensive reading.
REQUIRED HOURS: The regular hours for this full-time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday - Friday. Holiday, weekend and evening work hours will be required. Travel will be required to visit assigned national territory. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or division.
ADDITIONAL POSITION DETAILS: This position is a regular, full-time, exempt position. Annual Salary for this position is between $74,000 - $78,000 with a competitive benefits package. The specific factors that the College will consider when offering a salary to an individual will include, but not be limited to: education, training, relevant prior experience, and performance in prior roles. All staff positions are ineligible for visa or permanent resident card sponsorship. As a California employer, Pomona College requires all employees to be residents of California.
