Job description

Birth Certificate Technician

The Birth Certificate Technician is responsible primarily for the preparation and processing of birth certificates on newborn patients. This position also provides backup for a variety of functions with the HIM Department requiring advanced knowledge and/or experience such as front office duties, release of information, record analysis, etc. as described below.

Core Competencies

Completes Birth Certificates according to California state regulations utilizing the Electronic Birth Registration System (EBRS) provided by the California Department of Public Health. Prepares Paternity Opportunity Program (POP) documents in conjunction with birth certificate process. Transmits/files birth certificates with the Vital Records of the County of Los Angeles in a timely manner. Monitors timely receipt of Newborn Screening Program results (PKU's). Assists the Government Audit Coordinator and front office HIM staff as needed.

Department Specific Competencies

Performs Health Information Management receptionist including: answering and forwarding telephone calls as appropriate; mail distributions etc. Greet visitors/patients/physicians coming into HIM. Processes Release of Information Requests including scanning to the electronic medical record. Assists Release of Information/Medicolegal Correspondents as appropriate. Retrieves/prepares/scans medical records and loose documents for inclusion in the EMR. Retrieves records from Iron Mountain offsite storage vendor.
