What is a biotech accountant?

Biotech accountants are finance professionals who specialize in managing the accounting and financial operations of biotechnology companies. They handle tasks such as budgeting, financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and cost analysis specific to the biotech industry. Their expertise helps ensure that complex research and development expenses, intellectual property assets, and grant funding are properly accounted for. Biotech accountants also play a key role in supporting audits and facilitating financial decision-making for these innovative organizations.

How does working as an accountant in the biotech industry differ from accounting roles in other sectors?

Biotech accountants often handle unique financial challenges, such as tracking R&D expenditures, managing grant funding, and ensuring compliance with industry-specific regulations like those from the FDA or NIH. The role typically involves close collaboration with scientists, researchers, and regulatory teams to accurately allocate costs and report on project progress. Additionally, biotech companies may experience rapid growth or fluctuating funding, requiring accountants to be adaptable and proactive in financial planning and reporting. These aspects make the role dynamic and rewarding for those interested in both finance and science.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a biotech accountant, and why are they important?

To excel as a Biotech Accountant, you need strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, and an understanding of regulatory requirements specific to the biotech industry, often backed by a degree in accounting or finance and CPA certification. Familiarity with ERP systems like SAP or Oracle, as well as specialized biotech financial software, is typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for managing complex financial data and collaborating with scientific and business teams. These skills and qualifications are vital to ensure accurate financial management, regulatory compliance, and informed decision-making in the fast-evolving biotech environment.

Job description

Temporary accounting seat for someone who lives in AR and AP and can step into a live close without a long ramp.

Company

A San Diego biotechnology company specializing in iPSC-derived and primary human cells, disease-model cell lines, and bioassay services for pharma and research customers. Small, hands-on finance team where one person covers a lot of ground, so the work is broad rather than siloed.

Who thrives here

  • Owns the A/R aging report and is comfortable picking up the phone to chase a past-due invoice
  • Works accurately at speed, and can hold A/P, A/R, and purchasing at the same time
  • Steps into an existing process and runs it. This is a backfill, not a build
  • Wants a temporary assignment and can start quickly

The opportunity

Temporary backfill supporting daily accounting operations, with a strong focus on Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, and Procurement. On-site in San Diego (92131).

What you will own

  • Monitor A/R aging reports, manage collections, and follow up with customers so outstanding invoices get paid on time
  • Process A/P by verifying invoices, entering vendor bills, and preparing payment batches for approval
  • Coordinate procurement and purchasing so goods and services arrive on time, monitoring purchases for budget compliance and operational needs
  • Assist with month-end close, journal entries, and account reconciliations
  • Support fixed asset tracking, inventory accounting, sales tax compliance, and ad hoc financial reporting
  • Maintain accurate financial records in accordance with GAAP and company internal controls

Qualifications

Required

  • Hands-on Accounts Receivable AND Accounts Payable experience. This is the core of the role
  • NetSuite experience
  • Comfortable supporting month-end close, journal entries, and account reconciliations
  • Able to work on-site in San Diego

Bonus points

  • Biotech or life sciences industry experience
  • Procurement or purchasing coordination
  • Inventory accounting, fixed assets, or sales tax compliance exposure

Compensation and benefits

  • Pay rate: $35 to $45 per hour, depending on experience
  • Type: Temporary assignment, W-2 through Pave Talent
  • Schedule: On-site, San Diego, CA 92131

If you are an A/R and A/P specialist who can start quickly, we would like to talk.
