Purpose of Position
JOB SUMMARY
The job duties of the Engineer Intern include technical support of the conservation programs administered by Chippewa County Department of Land Conservation and Forest Management; and to provide responsive, courteous and efficient service to County residents and the general public. Start date may vary with school schedule. This is a limited term internship position and requires up to 40 hours per week during a period of 6-7 months for a commitment of 975 hours.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties described below are indicative of what the Engineer Intern might be asked to perform. This job description is to incorporate any county ordinances created for the position of Engineer Intern. This is not an exhaustive list of job responsibilities and therefore other duties may be assigned:
Administrative Functions:
  • Assist in layout and inspection of construction projects.
  • Perform site topographic surveys.
  • Prepare engineering drawings, reports, and bid documents in CAD software.
  • Perform natural resource inventories and mapping; geologic investigations; and site evaluations.
  • Perform engineering design computations.
  • Assist engineers with review and permitting of agricultural pollution control proposals and urban storm water management proposals.

Community Relations Functions:
  • Present educational information at department sponsored educational events.

  • Land Developers
  • Townships
  • Various County Departments

Team Members:
  • Department of Land Conservation & Forest Management staff

Minimum Qualifications
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required at the time of hire or for the continuation of employment.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • Must be currently enrolled in or a recent graduate with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, biosystems/biological engineering, environmental engineering, agricultural engineering, or other related course of study.
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of drafting and surveying preferred.
  • Knowledge of construction techniques and materials preferred.
  • Knowledge of CAD, and ArcGIS software preferred.
  • A valid driver's license is required.

Chippewa County offers the following benefits for Limited Term Employees (LTE):
  • Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS - ETF) - Depending on the number of hours worked and/or previous WRS work experience, an employee may be eligible and required to contribute 7.20% (2026) with a County match of 7.20% for a total of 14.40%. This percentage may change each year based on state requirements.
No other benefits are offered.
Limited Term Employees (LTEs) are individuals employed as seasonal, project-based, or reduced-hour staffing needs. LTE roles are established with the expectation of limited duration or scope and are not classified as full-time or part-time employees.
