Job Requirements

General Summary

Under minimal supervision, directs and coordinates the work of Biomedical Engineering Technicians responsible for the repair, maintenance, safety testing, and routine servicing of medical, radiographic, and fluoroscopic equipment. Implements and ensures adherence to departmental policies and procedures.


Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements describe the general nature and level of work performed by individuals assigned to this classification. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required.


Team Coordination and Technical Oversight


  • Coordinates and directs Biomedical Engineering Technicians assigned to the Clinical Engineering department. Works collaboratively with leadership to develop work standards and implement equipment testing procedures.
  • Establishes and monitors workflow, determines work assignments, and schedules staff accordingly.
  • Coordinates equipment testing and repair activities based on urgency and operational needs.
  • Schedules preventive maintenance in accordance with the Quality Assurance Plan while minimizing interruptions to patient care.
  • Provides technical guidance to staff regarding codes, standards, maintenance, and repair of radiographic equipment.
  • Consults with department managers and medical staff to troubleshoot equipment issues and minimize equipment downtime.

Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance

  • In collaboration with leadership, develops, administers, and ensures compliance with quality assurance measures to monitor the consistency and quality of Clinical Engineering services.
  • Monitors the timeliness of equipment inspections to ensure efficient response times and reduce equipment downtime.
  • Reviews potential equipment safety hazards and documents corrective actions taken.
  • Performs regular operational and accuracy checks on medical equipment.
  • Reviews and documents acceptance standard violations for newly purchased, rented, leased, or loaned equipment prior to use within UMMC.
  • Reports statistical data and corrective actions related to equipment performance and quality to leadership.
  • Ensures compliance with The Joint Commission standards, as well as Federal, State, and local regulations related to patient and employee safety.

Leadership and Staff Development

  • As Team Lead, directly oversees, evaluates, and motivates Biomedical Engineering Technicians within the Clinical Engineering department.

  • Assists with employee performance evaluations to ensure satisfactory departmental performance.
  • Establishes clear work procedures and performance expectations.
  • Monitors staff performance and provides constructive feedback and coaching.
  • Facilitates ongoing staff training and professional development.

Policy and Procedure Management

  • In conjunction with leadership, develops, implements, and ensures adherence to biomedical engineering practices and departmental policies designed to improve repair service efficiency and overall operational effectiveness.
  • Ensures staff compliance with established policies and procedures.

Vendor and Service Coordination

  • Coordinates with contracted medical equipment service providers to resolve equipment issues and arrange for repairs or replacement parts as needed.

Equipment Recommendations

  • Recommends equipment purchases and standardization initiatives to leadership based on operational history, equipment performance, and user experience.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintains accurate and efficient departmental records and reports in compliance with The Joint Commission and applicable Federal, State, and local regulations.

  • Maintains records including Maintenance Requests, Electrical Safety forms, and departmental performance statistics.
  • Communicates high-cost repair information to leadership and obtains approval prior to initiating repairs.

Work Experience

Education and Experience

  • Associate's degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology, Electronics Technology, or a related field required; equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of technical experience in the installation, testing, maintenance, and repair of clinical or biomedical equipment and instrumentation.
  • Prior lead or supervisory experience overseeing technical or maintenance staff preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of electronics and biomedical engineering principles related to the calibration, maintenance, and repair of biomedical equipment.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and regulations, including The Joint Commission, National Electrical Code (NEC), OSHA/MOSH, and related healthcare equipment standards.
  • Ability to demonstrate the proper use and maintenance of medical equipment for training purposes.
  • Proficiency in using specialized test equipment to calibrate, repair, and maintain medical devices.
  • Basic understanding of anatomy and physiology as related to the operation and use of medical equipment in clinical settings.
  • Ability to lead, train, evaluate, and motivate Biomedical Engineering Technicians.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with leadership, clinical staff, vendors, and employees across all levels of the organization.
