Sports biomechanics is the study of movement in sports (professional and amateur), exercise, and recreation. Professionals in this field research, develop, and implement products and service to improve the performance of athletes or help them to heal from injuries. Physical therapists and sports massage therapists utilize massage, heat therapy, stretching, and other methods to help injured athletes regain their range of motion. Biomechanical engineers conduct research on the nature of sports-related injuries to design braces or prosthetics to be used during treatment. Biomechanics specialists work alongside the engineers to test new and existing products for proper function, durability, safety, and performance.
