Job Summary
The Biology Lab Instructor/Coordinator is a hybrid position that combines instructional duties with lab management responsibilities. This role is essential to supporting the biology department's instructional goals by ensuring efficient lab operations and expanding course offerings.
The Lab Instructor/Coordinator will be responsible for teaching two Anatomy and Physiology labs (6 LEH), managing and preparing all biology labs for faculty (9 LEH), and maintaining compliance with safety regulations. Additional responsibilities include ordering supplies, maintaining equipment, and overseeing daily lab activities. The total instructional load is 15 LEH, with 10 required office hours per week each fall and spring semester.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in biology or related field; relevant work experience may be substituted for educational requirement
  • Commitment to student-centered learning and community engagement
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Proficient computer skills; MS Word, Excel, presentation software

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in biology or related field
  • Experience teaching at the college level preferred
  • Familiarity with standard biology lab equipment
  • One year of experience working with waste disposal and lab safety protocols.
  • Experience using Canvas or similar LMS

Essential Functions
Lab Coordination
  • Plan, implement, and coordinate the daily operations of the anatomy & physiology and introductory biology instructional labs
  • Set up lab equipment, specimens, and materials in accordance with the course syllabi
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and proper disposal of biological and chemical waste
  • Collaborate with faculty to align lab activities with learning outcomes
  • Provide orientation to faculty, staff, and students in the use of the lab, equipment, and supplies
  • Train and coordinate the activities of part-time laboratory staff
  • Maintain the inventory of supplies, laboratory equipment, chemicals, and specimens
  • Ensure equipment and instructional supplies are in good working order; may perform or oversee routine repairs and maintenance
  • Develop budget recommendations and coordinate lab activities within the approved budget

Instructional Duties
  • Teach two lab sections of anatomy & physiology each fall and spring semester
  • Assist with the development and update of instructional materials, lab manuals, and assessments
  • Introduce, in the form of a lecture, new concepts not covered by a lecture instructor
  • Develop and administer test material for each lab
  • Maintain a grade book for lab grades and attendance records
  • Participate in community service activities and Midland College engagement activities

Physical Demands
  • Must be able to bend, reach overhead, and lift/move equipment in excess of 25 pounds
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time
  • Ability to move easily within the lab
  • The person in this position frequently communicates with others verbally and electronically; must be able to exchange accurate information
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
