How much do bioinformatics internships jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 8, 2026, the average yearly pay for bioinformatics internships in the United States is $203,468.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $78,500.00 and $400,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What types of projects or tasks do bioinformatics interns typically work on?

Bioinformatics interns often work on projects such as analyzing genomic or proteomic data, developing data processing pipelines, or assisting with software tool development for biological research. They may help interpret experimental results, perform quality control on large datasets, or support ongoing research by visualizing data using specialized tools. Interns regularly collaborate with biologists, software engineers, and data scientists, gaining exposure to interdisciplinary teamwork. This hands-on experience allows interns to develop practical skills and deepen their understanding of real-world research challenges in the life sciences.

What is a Bioinformatics Internships job?

A Bioinformatics Internship is a temporary position that provides students or recent graduates with hands-on experience in analyzing biological data using computational tools. Interns may work on projects involving DNA sequencing, protein structure analysis, or developing algorithms for data processing. These positions are commonly found in research institutions, biotechnology companies, and pharmaceutical firms. The internship helps build practical skills in programming, data analysis, and biological interpretation, preparing candidates for careers in bioinformatics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Bioinformatics Internships position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Bioinformatics Internship, you should have a strong background in biology, computer science, and statistics, often supported by coursework or a degree in bioinformatics or a related field. Familiarity with programming languages such as Python or R, experience with genomic databases, and the ability to work with bioinformatics software tools are highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are essential soft skills for this role. These qualities enable interns to analyze complex biological data, collaborate successfully with interdisciplinary teams, and contribute meaningfully to scientific research projects.
