Job description

At Roche you can show up as yourself, embraced for the unique qualities you bring. Our culture encourages personal expression, open dialogue, and genuine connections, where you are valued, accepted and respected for who you are, allowing you to thrive both personally and professionally. This is how we aim to prevent, stop and cure diseases and ensure everyone has access to healthcare today and for generations to come. Join Roche, where every voice matters.

The Position

Roche is working to improve DNA sequencing data analysis. Roche is innovating new approaches that fundamentally change when and where DNA sequencing gets processed. Our goal is to analyze data as it's generated, where it's generated.

We are seeking a visionary and deeply technical leader to champion the customer-facing bioinformatics and software strategy for our revolutionary Axelios sequencing platform. As we launch XOOS-our cutting-edge ecosystem of bioinformatics tools-you will be the bridge between our pioneering new customers and our internal development teams.

This is not a traditional role. You will lead an elite team of bioinformatics scientists and software engineers to create bespoke, high-impact solutions, resolve sophisticated technical roadblocks, and even engage in collaborative research with early adopters. Because the Axelios platform operates on a completely different paradigm than traditional Sequencing-by-Synthesis (SBS), you will be instrumental in educating the market, ensuring seamless migration to our tools, and translating complex customer feedback into actionable development pipelines.

The Opportunity

  • Customer Advocacy & Technical Enablement: Serve as the primary executive-level technical contact for new customers, driving deep adoption of the XOOS bioinformatics ecosystem across major clinical and research applications.

  • Team Leadership: Build, inspire, and manage a high-performing team of customer-facing bioinformatics scientists and solutions architects.

  • Bespoke Solution Engineering: Lead the creation of customized workflows, data analysis pipelines, and software integrations to solve unique customer pain points and accelerate Axelios platform adoption.

  • Collaborative Research: Partner with strategic early-adopter customers on collaborative research projects, co-authoring whitepapers, and demonstrating the unique capabilities of Axelios non-SBS data.

  • Cross-Functional Feedback Loop: Act as a critical strategic partner to internal Bioinformatics and Software R&D teams, synthesizing market requirements, feature requests, and technical friction points into the product roadmap.

  • Commercial & Technical Strategy: Collaborate with Sales and Product Management to support high-value customer engagements, technical evaluations, and complex contract closures.

This position is based on-site in Santa Clara, CA or San Diego, CA. (This is a hybrid position.)

Relocation benefits are not being offered for this role.

Who You Are:
(Required)

  • You have a Ph.D.in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field with 4+ years of industry experience; or a Master's degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field with 6+ years of industry experience.

  • You have 8+ years of progressive experience in next-generation sequencing (NGS) bioinformatics, with a demonstrated track record of leadership in an industry setting.

  • You have a significant level of expertise and comprehensive knowledge of the NGS landscape, clinical genomics space, and secondary/tertiary data analysis pipelines.

  • You demonstrated leadership experience.

  • You have a high level of proficiency with cloud architectures (AWS, Azure, or GCP), modern software development practices, pipeline frameworks (e.g., Nextflow, Snakemake), and scripting languages (Python, R).

  • You have demonstrated experience in product commercialization, go-to-market execution, or technical customer enablement (similar to scaling platforms like DRAGEN).

Preferred:

  • You have demonstrated experience working with non-SBS technologies (e.g., long-read sequencing or alternative modalities)

  • You have exceptional communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills. You have the demonstrated ability to navigate complex, sensitive technical discussions with world-class clinical and scientific executives.

  • You have the ability to navigate the complexities of a global organization, adapt to changing business needs and work collaboratively within a diverse and inclusive environment.

  • You have excellent organizational skills, including the ability to efficiently evaluate, prioritize and handle multiple changing projects and priorities; you complete work in a timely, accurate and thorough manner.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Santa Clara, CA is $170,500 - $316,600. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.
