At QIAGEN, we are driven by a simple but powerful vision: making improvements in life possible.
We're dedicated to revolutionizing science and healthcare for the better. From our entrepreneurial roots to our current global presence, we've grown into a force for positive change. With thousands of employees across six continents, collaboration is our greatest strength. We're always striving to identify talented individuals to join our exceptional teams.
We have played a pivotal role in shaping modern science and healthcare, and we're just getting started. If you're someone who thrives on new challenges, values diversity and wants to make a tangible difference in people's lives, then QIAGEN is the place for you.
At QIAGEN, every day is an opportunity to make a real-life impact.
Join us, grow with us, and together, let's shape the future of biological discovery.
About the opportunity
QIAGEN Digital Insights is a leading provider of bioinformatics software and knowledge bases used by life scientists to gain insight from the molecular information in their biological samples. We have developed industry-leading software tools for analysis and reporting of biological data. We are passionate about our users, our products, and our vision, and are seeking smart, motivated engineers and scientists who are eager to join our team in creating software that helps improve people's lives.
Our mission is to make improvements in life possible. We accomplish this by designing tools used in labs all over the world to facilitate scientific discovery and progress, focused on genomics.
As a Bioinformatics Engineer in the Content Development team, you will play a critical role in maintaining and extending QIAGEN's biomedical knowledge base by integrating new knowledge from public data sources and facilitating capture of unstructured data into existing and new semantic models, as well as leveraging our Knowledge Graph to deliver data, interpretations, and inferences to our applications and customers. You will also contribute to data quality efforts by defining and implementing test plans, helping to ensure the accuracy and completeness of content delivered to our downstream application teams.
Your tasks include
  • Develop and maintain bioinformatics software tools and pipelines to ingest, transform, interpret, and export structured and unstructured biomedical data.
  • Maintain and extend a complex biomedical ontology spanning the entire range of biological entities and processes relevant to life science R&D and clinical genomics.
  • Collaborate with product management and application software developers to investigate new content sources related to product features and define requirements for content development projects.
  • Contribute to data quality efforts by defining and implementing test plans, helping to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the biomedical knowledge base and interpretation of content in the applications via a Quality Management System (QMS).

Your profile
  • Undergraduate degree in bioinformatics, genetics, molecular biology, or related field. Graduate degree preferred.
  • 3+ years of industry experience in bioinformatics, including experience writing production-quality code for bioinformatics tools and pipelines.
  • Strong software development fundamentals, with experience in multiple general-purpose programming languages, including Python, and comfort operating in a Linux environment. Competence with software engineering best practices such as version control, code review, unit and integration testing, documentation, and collaborative development.
  • Experience with multiple data modeling paradigms, including relational databases (SQL) and non-relational approaches such as graph databases (e.g., AWS Neptune, Neo4j).
  • Hands-on experience with biomedical ontologies and related technologies such as RDF and OWL.
  • Familiarity with bioinformatics tools in genome biomedical research (e.g., genomic databases, genome browsers, mutation repositories), or integrative data analysis as it relates to genetics, multiomics, cell biology, physiology and pathology.

The estimated base salary range for this position is $130,000 - $150,000. Compensation will be based on the candidate's experience, skills, geographic location, and other job-related factors.
