What is a Bioinformatics Certificate job?

A Bioinformatics Certificate job typically involves analyzing biological data using computational tools and techniques. Professionals in these roles work with DNA sequences, protein structures, and large datasets to extract meaningful patterns for research, healthcare, and biotechnology applications. A certificate in bioinformatics helps individuals gain specialized skills in programming, data analysis, and biological sciences, making them competitive for roles in academia, pharmaceuticals, and biotech industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Bioinformatics Certificate position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a bioinformatics role, you need a solid foundation in biological sciences, data analysis, and programming languages such as Python or R, often bolstered by a degree or certificate in bioinformatics or computational biology. Familiarity with bioinformatics tools (like BLAST, Gene Ontology, and Next-Generation Sequencing pipelines), statistical analysis software, and relevant database management systems is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set candidates apart in this field. These competencies are crucial for translating complex biological data into actionable insights, supporting research, and collaborating within interdisciplinary teams.

What kind of career advancement is available for someone with a Bioinformatics Certificate?

Earning a Bioinformatics Certificate can open the door to entry-level positions such as bioinformatics analyst or data technician, and it provides a strong foundation for career growth in research, healthcare, or the pharmaceutical industry. With experience, professionals often move into roles like senior bioinformatician, computational biologist, or bioinformatics project manager, and may specialize in areas such as genomics, proteomics, or algorithm development. Ongoing learning and networking can further expand your opportunities, especially if you pursue advanced degrees or certifications. Many employers value initiative, continuous skill development, and the ability to adapt to emerging technologies in this rapidly evolving field.

Job description

Advanced Systems Design is seeking a Molecular Biologist/Analyst for our client located in Jacksonville, FL.
This position is on-site in Jacksonville, FL, and requires in-person availability starting day 1.
Job Overview
We are seeking a candidate with a strong bench laboratory background as the highest priority for this role. This position requires hands-on experience working as a bench lab or wet lab technician, including direct involvement in molecular biology workflows and operating next-generation sequencing (NGS) instruments.
While bioinformatics experience is important, the primary need is for someone who is highly comfortable in a laboratory setting, supporting and performing upstream sequencing processes, and bridging that work into downstream bioinformatics analysis.
The selected candidate will work with current staff to develop, maintain, and support production-grade bioinformatics workflows for Illumina next-generation sequencing (NGS) data used in Newborn Screening (NBS) programs.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform hands-on bench laboratory work, including wet lab techniques and molecular workflows (top priority)
  • Operate and support next-generation sequencing (NGS) instruments (Illumina or similar platforms)
  • Provide direct support to laboratory staff conducting sequencing procedures
  • Support upstream molecular processes and connect them to downstream bioinformatics analysis
  • Develop and maintain bioinformatics workflows for NGS data
  • Deploy bioinformatics pipelines in local and cloud environments
  • Troubleshoot issues across both laboratory and bioinformatics systems
  • Manage genomic data lifecycle from creation through archival and restoration
  • Develop and maintain databases used in sequencing analysis
  • Train and support staff on sequencing workflows and bioinformatics tools
  • Ensure compliance with CAP/CLIA laboratory standards and quality control programs
  • Generate reports and provide regular updates on sequencing workflows and data quality

Required Qualifications (Emphasized)
  • Hands-on experience running next-generation sequencing (NGS) instruments (Illumina or similar)
  • Strong experience working as a bench lab technician or wet lab technician in a molecular biology, genomics, or clinical lab
  • Candidates without significant bench lab experience will not be considered
  • At least one year of experience performing sequencing workflows and/or analysis
  • Experience supporting both laboratory sequencing work and bioinformatics analysis
  • Familiarity with genomic data analysis tools and sequencing pipelines
  • Experience in clinical genomics or Newborn Screening environments preferred
  • Familiarity with CLIA / CAP lab environments preferred
  • Must be eligible for Florida Laboratory License

Education:
  • Master of Science (MS) with at least two years of work/research experience in bioinformatics, molecular biology, biology, biochemistry or other related field OR Bachelor of Science (BS) with three or more years of work/research experience in bioinformatics, molecular biology, biology, biochemistry or another related field.
