What You Will Do:

We are seeking a Bioinformatics Scientist to support the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) through analysis of short-and long-read sequencing data, including bulk and single-cell transcriptomic workflows. The ideal candidate has a relevant scientific or technical background, proficiency in Python and R, and experience with command line environments, high-performance computing resources, and messenger ribonucleic acid (RNA) sequencing data. This is a full-time, on-site opportunity in Bethesda, MD.

  • Perform computational analysis of deep sequencing data, including short-read and long-read platforms.
  • Conduct transcriptomic data analyses including alignment, abundance estimation, differential gene expression, and gene ontology/pathway analysis from bulk and single-cell workflows.
  • Maintain proper and detailed documentation of analyses performed and report results at laboratory meetings.
  • Provide programming and troubleshooting support to the Federal Government in the dissemination of research data.
  • Perform computational analyses on research datasets.
  • Collaborate with scientists to design, analyze, manage, and interpret data.
  • Recommend appropriate computational tools for testing scientific hypotheses and drawing valid conclusions.
  • Record observations and present findings at weekly laboratory meetings.
  • Attend scientific and programming meetings; take detailed notes and compile organized reports.
  • Maintain organized laboratory notebooks or databases to record computational results.
  • Provide statistical support and analysis on research data.
  • Write complex queries across multiple databases.
  • Contribute to scientific manuscripts and publications.

What You Will Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of ONE (1) years of bioinformatics, computational biology, or related experience.
  • Proficiency in Python and R programming languages.
  • Experience working in command line environments (Unix/Linux).
  • Experience utilizing high-performance computing (HPC) resources.
  • Experience analyzing messenger RNA sequencing (mRNA-seq) data.
  • Strong analytical, data management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary scientific teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Federal or DoD "public trust"; candidates must receive approved adjudication prior to onboarding with Guidehouse. Candidates with an active public trust or suitability are preferred.

  • Experience working with single-cell sequencing data and advanced transcriptomics workflows.
  • Experience contributing to scientific publications or manuscripts.
  • Familiarity with federal research environments such as NIH or similar institutions.
  • Knowledge of database management and advanced query development.
  • Exposure to additional bioinformatics tools and pipelines beyond Python and R.
The annual salary range for this position is $65,000.00-$108,000.00. Compensation decisions depend on a wide range of factors, including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, security clearances, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
